Durham Region Writing Rainbow

Durham Region Writing Rainbow Writing Rainbow is an LGBTQ writing group for youth in Durham Region; we write, hold events, do workshops, and host authors. Thanks Debbie!

Drop in at the Pickering Public Library conference room on Saturdays from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm! Durham Region Writing Rainbow (DRWR) brings LGBT* youth together to build healthy relationships and community, through writing, in a positive space where we can express, connect, and create.

*The asterisk means that we acknowledge and embrace the longer acronym and trans spectrum, including nonbinary and

ace folks. We also host events to perform and celebrate who we are and what we do, and bring in authors as guest speakers/facilitators. This is possible with the help of a Youth Opportunities Fund grant through the Ontario Trillium Foundation, our organizational mentors the AIDS Committee of Durham Region, and the amazing energy of the youth who make up the group. When we first started, Debbie's Boutique Cafe supported us by letting us take over a huge table every week (http://www.debbiescafe.ca/). TEMPORARY CLOSURE 😔 Writing Rainbow is held at the Pickering Public Library which means that since they're closed until April 5, we're also closed til April 5. If a few folks would like to schedule an offsite get together, comment or DM us and we'll work something out!

Please see official statement from Tony Prevedel, CAO, regarding City of Pickering’s response to COVID-19. City facilities, camps, programs, and events will be impacted starting 4:30 pm today until April 5, 2020. Visit pickering.ca for details and updates as they become available.

Signal boost!

"“Nature Held Me Close” is a zine about gender dysphoria and the great outdoors. Sometimes it’s hard to exist in a physical body, but spending time in nature can be one of the best ways to feel more comfortable in your own skin.

This zine is a place to feature art and writing from trans, nonbinary, and gender-nonconforming people about how spending time outdoors – hiking, camping, gardening, birdwatching, landscaping, doing outdoor education or research, or just sitting quietly in nature – has influenced how you feel about your body and your gender. Submissions are open to dysphoric people of any and all gender identities!"

starfoozle: ““ “Caw, caw!” A huge black crow circled above me in the air and landed on a rock nearby. We looked at each other in silence. “Crow, are you a boy or a girl?” “Caw, caw!” I laughed and...

Hi everyone, Sarah here. I don't know how many of you knew Donna, but she was my first professional career-type boss, she was the one who encouraged me to apply for a grant for Durham Region Writing Rainbow back in 2013, and she introduced me to ACDR at the same time. I work with ACDR Youth thanks to that, and thanks to her reference this June. It's hard to think of her as gone when she was so instrumental to where I am today. Thank you Donna. You were a real one.

We are deeply saddened to hear of the passing of PFLAG Canada, Durham Region Past President, Donna McAllister. Donna was a tireless advocate for our 2SLGBTQ community and we wish to express our most heartfelt condolences to her family and friends.

Our Story

Durham Region Writing Rainbow (DRWR) brings LGBTQ youth together to build community through a shared love of writing. We have a drop-in writing group once a week where we can connect and create in a supportive peer-led space. We also make zines, host events to perform and celebrate our stories, do writing workshops, and have guest speakers.

Join us at the Pickering Public Library on Saturdays from 2 pm to 4 pm!

DRWR is possible thanks to the amazing energy of the youth who make up the group. We love you weirdos.

The use of the space is graciously donated by our community partner, the Pickering Public Library. We are also former grantees of a Youth Opportunities Fund grant through the Ontario Trillium Foundation, and former mentees of the AIDS Committee of Durham Region.
