This Junker JU52/1m, registered to Canadian Airways Limited as CF-ARM, is shown in 1937, unloading heavy cargo - a part of a turbine weighing one ton - for use by the Churchill River Power Co. for a hydro-electric power plant in Saskatchewan. These Junkers were the only planes able to carry this type of freight despite CF-ARM being a very early single-engined version; most JU52 aircraft after this had an additional two wing-mounted engines as sub-type /3m.
The sketch done by Art Walter for the Western Canada Aviation Museum in 1985 and we thank the Royal Aviation Museum, Winnipeg, for permission to publish.

The liner Normandie’s maiden voyage is celebrated in this 1st June 1935 issue of L’Illustration. Built in Saint Nazaire and launched 1932. She was the largest, fastest and most advanced technologically. Able to reach speeds up to 31.2knots with turbo electric power and four propellers winning the Blue Ribbon on her first voyage and on several more years. Her elegance made her the ‘queen of the thirties’ with Art Deco features. More history at

This day, the 7th of December is the 84th anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor. There were waves of bombers from Japan arriving in the early morning and the number killed and ships lost was extensive. It was the day that United States joined the battle of World War Two and fought alongside the Allies.
The image is of 'USS Shaw' being bombed as she sat in dry dock that fateful day. See: for documentation about the Pearl Harbor attack

A big thanks to the authors, Richard Gimblett and Karl Gagnon, by the Director as the afternoon book signing drew to a close. This new book ‘Guardians of the North’, well researched and comprehensive is a great addition to your library. The number of books sold was higher than expected, an indication of the quality of the text and drawings of the authors. Season’s greetings were enjoyed by all and an important request to fund the future of the charity.
