We exist to preserve the past and to educate the future to maintain a sense of identity and pride in Pitt Meadows’ heritage. The Pitt Meadows Museum has two sites, The General Store (1886 c.) site and The Hoffmann & Son Machine Shop (1934) site. We are located just South of the C.P.R. tracks in on Harris Road in Pitt Meadows. Exhibits and programs at both sites relate to the pioneer history of the

After a jam packed and full summer, we're extremely grateful to get to share the history of Pitt Meadows with our community!

Starting off the summer with Pitt Meadows Day and wrapping it up with our last Heritage Thursday session, thank you to everyone who dropped by all of our events this year to say hi and participate.

This year we attended Pitt Meadows Day, Airport Day, Canada Day, Country Fest, and Blueberry Fest. We hosted our usual popular Heritage Thursdays and our newest event Museum Fest, both of which will be back next summer!

As a way to celebrate our staff for the busiest summer we have had in a while, we will be opening a little later on Sunday, August 30th to thank them. We will be open on Sunday from 1:30 to 4:00 pm.

Thank you again for such a busy and fun filled summer!

This weeks out of the box artifact is a cookbook supporting the Pitt Meadows Airport Pathway.

Pitt Meadows Regional Airport was built to serve as a satellite site to the Vancouver International Airport and was announced in May 1961 by the Department of Transport. The airport officially opened in 1963. Currently the airport consists of one staffed control tower, a terminal building, a restaurant, three paved runways and a water runway. The airport also offers flight training, aircraft storage, maintenance and parts, filming opportunities, tours, recreational flying, search and rescue, and many more. Airport day is a yearly event that happens at the airport, with shuttles running to drop off people attending, the event is a fun-filled family activity with vendors and displays. “The Pitt Meadows Regional Airport (YPK) is currently owned and operated by the Pitt Meadows Airport Society which is a not-for-profit organization, which reinvests all earnings back into YPK in order to improve the airport for the community” (Taken off of their website)

Memory Lane Mondays August 24th post is all about farming.

This is a photo of the Brooke children and their grandmother standing next to their calves. Their grandmother, Manie Brooke leads the line on the right. Next to Manie is Arthur Brooke standing next to his calf. Following Arthur is his sister Daphne who is holding on to the rein of her calf. Finally, on the far left is Elizabeth Brooke (in grade 5) with her arm wrapped around the neck of Princess Fern (her calf). This photo is believed to be taken in May or June of 1957c.

According to Elizabeth Brooke, on the day that this photo was taken her Grandmother came for a visit. She and her siblings took this opportunity to show off their 4-H calves their grandmother. 4-H is a rural club for kids. These 4-H calves were dairy calves trained on the halter, and trained to be showed off at the fair. Before it was a dairy farm, it was a berry farm.

Looking for a fun activity for your kids to take part in? Have you tried our fun Museum Sunday kits?

Our Museum Sunday kits are available in our main gallery for a $2.00 donation and contain everything you need (minus basic supplies like scissors and markers) to make the craft that you choose including a tutorial, supplies, mini book and a sticker from our galleries. Each week we put out a new kit, and we always have kits available in our galleries. These kits are meant to be enjoyed at home.

Be sure to drop by and pick up a kit or two!

Memory Lane Mondays August 17th post is all about Royalty. These photographs were taken in 1966 during Queen Juliana’s visit to Pitt Polder.

Queen Juliana reigned from September 4th 1948 to April 30th 1980. During the Second World War, Juliana relocated with her children to Canada, returning to the Netherlands following the liberation of the country in 1945. Canada and the Netherlands have always had a close relationship ever since, and every year the Netherlands gifts Canada with tulips as a symbol of gratitude and friendship.

This weeks out of the box artifact is a plaque for the opening of the addition and renovations of Meadowland elementary school from September 23rd 1994.

Former students of the school reported that they helped build the trees, pond and ring around it. Alumni have also notified us that a covered play area was built a year or two after this picture was taken. Past students have informed us that while this school was being built, students were temporarily sent to Glenwood school to continue with their education.

This school opened in 1961 (the same year as Pitt Meadows Secondary School). The school closed in 2004. Eventually Greybrook Academy, a private school, would operate out of the site, but it too would close a few years later. Today the former school building is Canyon Springs Montessori academy.
