THE ATLANTIC CHARTER 85TH ANNIVERSARY

85 years ago, a meeting on the shores of Placentia Bay changed the course of history. British Prime Minister Winston Churchill and United States President Franklin D. Roosevelt met aboard HMS Prince of Wales in Placentia Bay, Newfoundland. Their historic meeting resulted in the Atlantic Charter, a joint statement of shared principles that outlined their vision for a better and more peaceful world following the Second World War.

The Atlantic Charter became an important foundation for the post-war international order and helped inspire the creation of the United Nations.

This year, we proudly recognize the 85th Anniversary of the Atlantic Charter, remembering the historic meeting that took place right here in Placentia Bay and celebrating the lasting significance of this remarkable moment in world history.

85 years later, Placentia Bay remains at the heart of the story.

The Atlantic Charter Historic Site in Ship Harbour, NL is located at coordinates 47°21′15″N 53°55′28″W.
