Tues night’s practice was wildland training. A busy evening on Ash Main as 2 x attack teams and 1 x water supply team fought a “fire”.

On Sat, after a quick breakfast, Duty Crew Charlie was busy with a few tasks. Started with rolling up the wildland hose from Tues and then putting it back from whence it came (LOL), filling and fueling vehicles as required, and even getting some driving in.

On Fri and Sat, SLFD hosted an Air Brakes course at Hall 3. FFs from Beaver Creek and Cherry Creek attended along the 7 FFs we had on the course. Congrats all as this is a big step in their firefighting training.

Provincial Camp Fire ban has been lifted in our area. Be aware that there are many communities that have maintained their closures.

Fire Danger Rating, Prohibitions and Restrictions - ACRD Bylaw and Provincial Rule
Danger Class - Moderate but forecasted to lower to Low
Camp Fires - Open
Category A (ACRD)/Category 2 (Provincial) - ACRD Closed
Category B (ACRD)/Category 3 (Provincial) - ACRD Closed

Active Wildfires
Province: 26 - down from 29
Vancouver Island: 0 - down from 2

Sports: NHL - Montreal is tied 1 - 1 with Carolina in the Eastern Conference final. Go Canadiens Go! MLB - Blue Jays rose to 7th in the American League with a 25 - 28 record. MLS - Vancouver remains 1st in the Western conference with Toronto remains 11th and Montreal remains 12th in the Eastern conference.

Tues night’s practice had a couple of events happening at the training site. One group had a live fire going in the burn building. The others were busy with vehicle accidents. A busy night for all.

On Sat, after a quick breakfast, Duty Crew Alpha was busy with some wildland training at Hall 1 and 2. This included racking the trucks, going to Hall 1 to practice prep and go tactics and then over to Hall 2 to practice anchor and hold. Definitions for the two tactics - "Prep and Go" in wildland firefighting refers to a tactic where firefighters prepare a structure for defense and then evacuate if conditions become too dangerous. This approach is used when immediate action is needed to protect lives and property from advancing fires.” "Anchor and hold" refers to a firefighting strategy where firefighters establish a secure starting point (anchor) to begin constructing firelines and then maintain control over that area (hold) to prevent the fire from spreading.** This method is crucial for ensuring safety and effective fire suppression.”

We’ve had some new people join the department - a big welcome to Tony, John, Matt, and Hanna (junior).

Hi all

Happy Mothers Day.

Last week’s page outs were an AMA Structure Smoke (in Port Alberni’s area - stood down) on Thurs, a Burning Complaint (no issues) on Thurs, and an FR Red on Sat.

Air Quality - Fair

As per Provincial regulations, all burning is closed until further notice.

Fire Danger Rating, Prohibitions and Restrictions - ACRD Bylaw and Provincial Rule
Danger Class - Moderate but forecasted to rise to High
Camp Fires - Closed
Category A (ACRD)/Category 2 (Provincial) - ACRD Closed
Category B (ACRD)/Category 3 (Provincial) - ACRD Closed

Active Wildfires
Province: 23 - no change from 23
Vancouver Island: 2 - up from 0

Sports: NHL - Montreal is tied 1 - 1 with Buffalo. Go Canadiens Go! MLB - Blue Jays dropped to 9th in the American League with a 18 - 22 record. MLS - Vancouver remains in 2nd in the Western conference with Toronto drops to 9th and Montreal rose to 10th in the Eastern conference.

Last Sun, FF Danielle took some FFs thru an FR practice. The night focused on Diabetes and heart attack patient assessment.

Tues night’s practice was Hall night. FFs were busy with inventories, maintenance (vehicle and building), and refuelling vehicles. We also have a new cover that can be used for any event we have but specifically designed as a Rehabilitation (Rehab) cover. On a fire scene, FFs have to get their vitals checked to ensure they can continue to fight the fight. In inclement weather, this will provide cover when FFs have to take their equipment off. Thanks to FPO Chris in spearheading this great new piece of equipment.

On Weds, FC Mike headed to Bamfield Volunteer Fire Department to proctor practicals for their FFs.

On Sat, after a quick breakfast, Duty Crew Charlie headed to Hall 2 to prepare our wildland trailer by focussing on the tool kits and structure protection kits. Also we placed our “pumpkin” out and ensured all pumps were up and running.
