INTERNATIONAL FIREFIGHTERS’ DAY 🚒 | Today, Monday, May 4, is International Firefighters’ Day. Port Colborne Fire and Emergency Services recognizes the dedication, professionalism, and service of firefighters in our community and around the world.

Firefighters play a crucial role in protecting lives, property, and public safety. Their commitment goes beyond emergency response through ongoing training, prevention efforts, and public education.

First recognized globally in 1999, International Firefighters’ Day was established to honour firefighters and remember those who have lost their lives in the line of duty. The date of May 4 was chosen in recognition of St. Florian, the patron saint of firefighters.

Today, we also honour and remember those who have made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty.

The City of Port Colborne extends its sincere appreciation to all members of Port Colborne Fire and Emergency Services for their continued service to our community.

HAZMAT TRAINING ☣️ | This week, our full-time firefighters from Platoon B took part in hands-on training with Class B hazardous materials suits.

Our crew reviewed how to properly put on and remove the suits ensuring they stay sealed, avoid contamination, and allow for safe entry and exit during a Hazmat response.

Ongoing training like this helps ensure our firefighters are ready to respond safely, confidently, and effectively in hazardous environments.

SPARKY TURNS 75 🐾 | Happy birthday Sparky! Today, Port Colborne Fire & Emergency Services is celebrating Sparky the Fire Dog's 75 years of fire safety education. Since 1951, Sparky has been the official mascot of the National Fire Protection Association, sharing life-saving fire safety messages across North America.

75 years strong… that’s 575 in dog years. 🔥🐶

Fire safety has changed over the years, but the basics still save lives. Here are some key reminders Sparky continues to share:
• Install working smoke alarms on every level of your home and in all sleeping areas
• When the alarm sounds — get out and stay out
• Create and practice a home fire escape plan
• Keep hot items out of reach to prevent burns
• Stay safe with lithium-ion batteries — use proper chargers and avoid damaged ones

🔥 Fire safety starts with you.
