The ‘Cornell 7’ case has come up in our Stand Up, Speak Out presentations lately, highlighting an important lesson: bystander intervention matters.

With more than 50 students reportedly in the group chat where men were invited to participate, the case raises important questions about how young people can recognize concerning situations and safely respond.

💟 Thankful Thursday! 💟

A big thank you to TD Bank – Port Coquitlam Branch for your generous $1,000 donation to Children of the Street! 💚

It was lovely meeting with Susanne and Carmen and sharing more about the work we do to help keep children and youth safe from sexual exploitation.

These funds will be put to use right away, helping us bring prevention education to kids in Port Coquitlam and give them the knowledge and tools they need to stay safe.

🧡 Every Child Matters.

Today, September 30, is the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation and Orange Shirt Day. It is a day to honour the children who never returned home from residential schools, Survivors, their families and communities.

This day is an opportunity to learn about the history and ongoing impacts of residential schools and the lasting effects of colonialism on Indigenous communities.

It is also a time to recognize the strength and resilience of Survivors and Indigenous communities, and to consider our shared responsibility to support truth and reconciliation.

We encourage everyone to:

🧡 Take part in local commemorative events
🧡 Learn about the history and legacy of residential schools
🧡 Take time to listen, learn and reflect

May we continue taking meaningful steps toward a future grounded in respect, understanding and dignity for every child.

Global News is reporting that police are urging parents to review the location settings on their children’s social media and communication apps after two Edmonton youth who were allegedly being sexually exploited were reportedly followed to their homes.

The incident highlights the importance of talking with children about safe social media use and ensuring location-sharing features are turned off whenever possible. Protecting personal information online is a simple but important step in staying safe.

Some good news: One of the most consequential updates to Canada's Criminal Code in generations to better protect children and respond to modern threats is now law.

The Protecting Victims Act gives police, prosecutors, and courts stronger tools to protect children from sexual exploitation, online abuse, and predators who target kids in Canada and abroad. More specifically, the changes:

• increase penalties for serious sexual offences, including sexual assault, indecent exposure, voyeurism, non-consensual distribution of intimate images, including sexual deepfakes, and obtaining sexual services from a person under 18

• crack down on online sextortion by creating new offences for threatening to distribute child sexual abuse and exploitation material and distributing be******ty depictions, which can be used to manipulate children for sexual purposes

• strengthen Canada's ability to prosecute Canadians who sexually abuse or exploit children abroad

• give law enforcement and prosecutors more time to investigate and lay charges by extending the limitation period for prosecuting Internet service providers that fail to meet mandatory reporting requirements from two years to five years

• require Internet service providers to preserve data for 365 days instead of 21 days, helping ensure critical evidence is not deleted before police and prosecutors can act

• protect youth from being recruited, pressured, or groomed into criminal activity by creating a new offence of recruiting youth into crime
