Do you know the difference between cow parsnip and giant hogweed? While these plants have some key similarities - including both having toxic sap - there's some key differences to tell these two species apart.

🐮Cow parsnip:
🌱Native to B.C.
🌱 1 - 3 m tall
🌱Flower groups 10 - 20 cm across
🌱Leaves similar to a maple leaf
🌱Light-coloured stalk

🐷Giant hogweed:
🌱Invasive in B.C.
🌱 2 - 5 m tall
🌱Flower groups up to 50 cm across
🌱Leaves similar to a maple leaf, but pointier!
🌱Purple spots on stalk

Both species have toxic sap that reacts with sunlight to cause severe blisters and burns! It is important to avoid skin contact with both these plants.

Japanese knotweed is a highly persistent invasive species that pops up around Port Hardy. It can grow up to 3 metres tall, has reddish stalks, large green leaves, and small white flowers. It's known to damage infrastructure like driveways, sidewalks, or even house foundations by growing through cracks in concrete and asphalt.

If you see it growing around the community, report it! Is it on District property? Report it on Q-Alert as a general inquiry. Is it on your property? You can pay for Strategic Natural Resource Group to eradicate it. Give their Port McNeill office a call at 250-956-2260.

Our Public Works crews are out painting lines as part of our efforts to keep Port Hardy looking its best.

Please slow down, stay alert, and give workers plenty of space when passing through work zones. A little extra caution goes a long way in helping keep our staff safe while they work to beautify our community.

It sure is windy today! The wind is great at grabbing unsecured items and blowing them every which way.... items like recycling waiting for curbside pick up! Make sure your recycling is secured wherever you're storing it or if you've put it at the curbside for pick up so it doesn't blow away! 💨💨💨💨💨

🌳🐿️ A Friendly Reminder from Your Parks Team 🐿️🌳

We love seeing people enjoy our parks and public spaces. Creativity, fun, and getting outdoors are all things we support!

That said, if you install items on public property without permission—whether it’s a rope swing, a ball on a rope, a homemade obstacle course, a hammock, or any other “improvement”—it can create safety and liability concerns for the entire community.

Recently, a rope swing ball were installed at Beaver Harbour Park. While they may look like harmless fun, they don’t meet safety standards and will be removed today.

🏃‍♂️⚽ If you’ve left any personal items attached to trees, structures, or other public property, please collect them before they’re removed.

We know it can seem like we’re being party poopers, but public spaces have safety standards that must be followed to help protect everyone who uses them. Once something is installed on District property, the District can be held responsible if someone gets hurt.

So if you’re feeling inspired to build, swing, hang, tie, attach, or invent something fun—please do it on your own property (with permission, of course 😉). If you have a great idea for a park addition, talk to us, we can help guide you in the process.
