It is with deep sadness that we recognize the sudden passing of Jeff Lees, who previously served as a Councillor for the Municipality of Port Hope for an incredible 25 years.

Jeff was a devoted public servant as a Councillor and Deputy Mayor alongside four mayors, five CAOs and seven different councils. He brought unwavering dedication to the Council table, helping to shape many of the influential decisions that have contributed to the growth and vitality of our community.

“As a life-long resident, Jeff took immense pride in his community and consistently placed the well-being of Port Hope residents at the forefront of all of his efforts and incredible volunteerism,” stated Mayor Olena Hankivsky. “His dedication was not only professional but deeply personal, reflecting his love for the place he called home.”

“Jeff was not only a valued member of our Council, but a true pillar of our community,” added former Mayor Bob Sanderson. “During my years as Mayor, I came to trust and deeply appreciate his counsel. He never sought the spotlight - his focus was always on what was best for Port Hope. In his heart and in his actions, Jeff lived for this community. He was practical, thoughtful, and brought a steady balance to the Council table. His door was always open, and he was someone the community knew they could depend on. Jeff’s quiet strength and unwavering dedication touched countless lives, and his loss will be deeply felt for years to come.”

Beyond his role on Council, Jeff was honoured with the 2022 Outstanding Citizen Civic Award in recognition of more than 30 years of dedicated community service. His contributions spanned a wide range of organizations and events, including the Port Hope Kinsmen, Float Your F***y Down the Ganny committee, Critical Mass Art, the HBIA, the Port Hope Fair, the Santa Claus Parade, the Highway of Heroes Ride, The Lions Club, Big Brothers, and Canada Day Fireworks. Jeff was also a passionate supporter of local sports, especially the Port Hope Panthers.

Our thoughts are with his wife, Laurie, his son Garnet, and their family and friends at this time. In recognition of his service to the Municipality, and his profound impact on the community, the flags at Town Hall have been lowered to half-mast.

We are grateful for Jeff’s many years of invaluable service and his tremendous influence in shaping Port Hope. His legacy of commitment, integrity, and care for the community will not be forgotten.
