That is a wrap Port Hope! Walton Street is open, and the amazing Behan Construction is packing up.

Wow, what a few years this has been. We cannot thank our community enough, ESPECIALLY our Downtown residents and businesses for their resilience, as this small town took on a once-in-a-generation main street reconstruction. Together, we’ve built more than just a new street, we’ve built a stronger, more connected community. We hope this community pride carries on as we all continue to support local and proudly BE PORT HOPE.

Do you live or work on Walton Street (within the current closure area)? Have you put your garbage out on the curb yet? If not, please remember to have it out by 7:00 a.m. tomorrow (October 2) so we can clear the street and have it looking its best for the live filming of Breakfast Television on Friday.

Hey Port Hope! Remember when we said Walton Street was getting ready for its big debut? Well, we are excited to share that Breakfast Television will be taking over Port Hope this Friday (October 3) for their live broadcast! They will be set up right on Walton Street (at Queen Street) so be sure to tune in, or better yet, come on down and show your Port Hope pride in the live audience.

Listen up Walton Street residents and businesses in the closure area: to preserve the beautiful look of our Downtown for the filming, please have your garbage out a day early (by 7 a.m. on Thursday, October 2), so our contractor can collect it ahead of filming.

Despite the rain, our crews worked hard this week to get everything ready for paving on Monday! The bridge had 50mm of old asphalt shaved off, crews cut around sewer grates and manholes, and the refurbished streetlights are now in place. Once the fresh pavement is down, all that’s left are the finishing touches: paint, crosswalk stamping, and a few final details. We’re almost there, Port Hope!

Don't forget, Downtown is open for business during the Walton closure. Come down this weekend and support our local gems!

Oops! You may have just caught our earlier post saying asphalt was coming tomorrow… plot twist: we’ve just learned it’s been bumped to Monday. Life on a construction site, right? The good news: this little delay doesn’t change the fact that fresh asphalt is on its way, and before long we’ll all be cruising down a smooth Walton Street.

Walton Street is officially closed (from Mill to Pine) as various crews get the road ready for its final layer of asphalt. All sidewalks remain open, so come downtown to shop, sip, or dine while watching the progress unfold. Please remember to cross with care and keep an eye out for our hi-vis spotters, who are on site to help safely guide both pedestrians and machinery.

If you stopped by Walton Street this week, you likely noticed the finishing touches coming together. This week, crews focused on the detailed brickwork between the road and sidewalks, our beautifully restored streetlights started going up, and prep work began for signage and barricades ahead of Monday’s closure. The anticipation is building, and Walton Street is almost ready for its big debut!

Hey Port Hope! A friendly reminder that the 2-week closure of Walton Street starts Monday (September 22). Walton Street (from Mill to Pine) will be closed from September 22 to October 3, while crews lay the final layer of asphalt, curbing, paint fresh lines, and add finishing touches. As always, we will keep you updated if these timelines change.

A few things to remember:
- Sidewalks and businesses are still open, so keep showing them love!
- Transit will be rerouted around the closure.
- John Street will go two-way for turnarounds.
- Queen, Ontario, John and Cavan will be temporary dead ends (where they meet Walton)

This week, the site may have looked a little quiet, but our crews were hard at work getting everything ready for the upcoming two-week closure. They wrapped up all the driveway aprons along the construction zone, adjusted and filled in the maintenance holes to grade, finished the last stretch of sidewalk at the church, and raised the catch basin before pouring fresh concrete. Crews are also tidying up the yard next to Town Hall to open up more parking, which is perfect timing since this will also serve as the shuttle stop for the Port Hope Fair

And just a quick reminder: While Walton may finally be starting to look like a real road again, this is still very much an active construction zone. Heavy machinery and construction crews remain onsite and, for everyone's safety, the road remains closed to all outside vehicles until further notice.
