Over the past year, the Port Moody Police Department has researched and tested body-worn camera technology and is now in a position to phase the cameras into frontline policing.
The Port Moody Police Department has body-worn cameras that are being initially deployed to a small number of frontline officers. Of note:
•These cameras are mounted to officers’ uniforms and will record interactions for evidentiary and accountability purposes.
•Officers will activate their cameras as soon as practical during interactions with the public and will also inform the person being recorded as soon as practical.
•Officers will not continuously record on their cameras if they are not responding to a specific incident. There may be times when officers will use discretion not to record interactions that are sensitive in nature including in healthcare settings, places of worship and in courtrooms.
“The introduction of body-worn cameras is an important milestone for our department and our community. These cameras provide an impartial record of interactions, enhance transparency and accountability and help strengthen public trust. The PMPD consulted the community for our 2024-2026 Strategic Plan and learned that citizens were supportive of introducing this technology and we are now ready to do that. Body-worn cameras will support our officers by capturing critical evidence and providing greater clarity during complex incidents. Ultimately, body-worn cameras are another tool that helps us deliver professional, modern, and effective policing to the citizens of Port Moody.” – Chief Constable David Fleugel.
The Port Moody Police Department anticipates a full rollout of body-worn cameras to frontline officers by late 2026.
