Over the past year, the Port Moody Police Department has researched and tested body-worn camera technology and is now in a position to phase the cameras into frontline policing.

The Port Moody Police Department has body-worn cameras that are being initially deployed to a small number of frontline officers. Of note:

•These cameras are mounted to officers’ uniforms and will record interactions for evidentiary and accountability purposes.

•Officers will activate their cameras as soon as practical during interactions with the public and will also inform the person being recorded as soon as practical.

•Officers will not continuously record on their cameras if they are not responding to a specific incident. There may be times when officers will use discretion not to record interactions that are sensitive in nature including in healthcare settings, places of worship and in courtrooms.

“The introduction of body-worn cameras is an important milestone for our department and our community. These cameras provide an impartial record of interactions, enhance transparency and accountability and help strengthen public trust. The PMPD consulted the community for our 2024-2026 Strategic Plan and learned that citizens were supportive of introducing this technology and we are now ready to do that. Body-worn cameras will support our officers by capturing critical evidence and providing greater clarity during complex incidents. Ultimately, body-worn cameras are another tool that helps us deliver professional, modern, and effective policing to the citizens of Port Moody.” – Chief Constable David Fleugel.

The Port Moody Police Department anticipates a full rollout of body-worn cameras to frontline officers by late 2026.

Rounding out the month, here’s a look back at some intriguing matters we dealt with:

•On May 2, an officer was flagged down by multiple bystanders at Sasamat Lake reporting an intoxicated female causing a disturbance as the park was closing. The officer spoke with the female and attempted to find her safe transportation home, however, she did not appreciate that idea. Instead, she became more agitated then cracked open vodka soda can & began to guzzle it, much to the dismay of the officer - she was arrested before she could polish it off. Needless to say, she chose the handcuff option rather than the rideshare option we suggested. Over the month we dealt with other issues at the lake including impaired drivers, disturbances and an assault with bear mace.

•On May 14, we teamed up with other enforcement agencies to host a Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Blitz in Port Moody. Of the 30 commercial vehicles inspected, 11 were pulled from service. 48 violations were noted, resulting in 19 violation tickets issued [see photo].

•In the evening of May 15, an officer on routine patrol noted a commotion outside of a business on St Johns Street. A teen was taken into custody after it was learned he pulled a knife on a customer and threatened him. Further investigation revealed the teen was asked to leave the business after he demanded to use their outlet to charge his phone, sparking the conflict. The matter remains under investigation.

•On May 21, we received a report of several youth who sold knock-off TaylorMade golf clubs. The victim attempted to get her funds back but the suspects were not replying to follow-up messages. The following day, officers met up and arrested the youths who were trying to sell another set of the faux clubs. The youths have since returned the nearly $1k to the victim. Buyers, be wary!

•On May 26 at around 3 p.m., officers were called to a hit & run in Newport Village - the driver of an SUV reportedly fled after side swiping another vehicle. The suspect driver was tracked down and arrested [see photo]. He was determined to be impaired by alcohol, failing a roadside screening device. He now faces charges, impoundment, as well as a prohibition.
