From The Trillium: What cuts to outdoor education tell us about land- (and duck-) based learning

Cuts to outdoor education threaten learning opportunities that cannot be replicated inside a classroom. Programs such as the Island Natural Science School allow children—particularly those without access to cottages or summer camps—to experience nature directly and build confidence, cooperation and environmental awareness.

Chief Kelly LaRocca’s advocacy for outdoor education reinforces that meaningful knowledge comes through direct relationships with the land.

Closing these programs would deepen educational inequities while moving students further away from Indigenous understandings of humanity’s place within the natural world.

Protecting outdoor education would honour Indigenous knowledge, support children’s well-being and help cultivate responsible stewards for future generations.

Check out the Toronto Star's July 24th article on the restoration of the Don River.

After decades of industrial pollution, the Don River has been reconnected with Lake Ontario through a newly constructed river valley. The project provides flood protection, improves water quality and has created Biidaasige Park—one of Toronto’s largest new green spaces in generations. The restoration is already producing significant ecological results: more than 20 fish species have returned, along with birds, turtles, frogs, beavers, mink and other wildlife.

From an MSIFN perspective, the issue highlights the need to place the health of the water, fish and surrounding ecosystem ahead of short-term economic considerations. The return of aquatic species demonstrates what can happen when governments invest in restoring damaged lands and waters. Allowing a major development to jeopardize that recovery would run counter to our principles of stewardship and responsibility to future generations.

Now, there are more than 20 species — most of which haven’t been seen in the old mouth of the Don in decades. One of these species is the Great Blue Heron.
