Our Story
Newcomer Settlement Services is a program of the Portage Learning and Literacy Centre. We provide settlement services and language training for newcomers to Canada living in Portage la Prairie and the Central Plains region. We offer formal English as a Second Language (ESL) classes and coordinate volunteers to offer informal language training (one-to-one or small group sessions) for anyone wanting to improve their English. We also coordinate a variety of events throughout the year to create and build community connections, such as information sessions, community festivals & BBQs, pot-lucks, swimming, skating, youth programming, and a women's support group, to name a few. Our program also offers SWIS, Settlement Worker in Schools, for direct service and support for newcomer youth in schools of the Portage la Prairie School Division.
