✨ Celebrating Our Ribbon Skirt Making Class Participants ✨

Makoose C Gamik is proud to recognize the 18 participants who attended our Ribbon Skirt Making Class. Over three inspiring days, each participant created their own beautiful ribbon skirt. Their hard work, dedication, and determination were truly inspiring to witness.

Throughout the workshop, each group shared laughter, supported one another through challenges, and celebrated the accomplishment of completing a ribbon skirt they can wear with pride.

Congratulations to each and every participant! Your creativity, resilience, and commitment to preserving and celebrating our culture are something to be proud of.

💜 The Meaning of the Ribbon Skirt

The colors of the ribbons are often connected to our spirit names, while the patterns and designs on the fabric may represent our clans or spirit guides, such as the Mikinaak (Turtle) Clan. Like our spirit names, the colors of our ribbon skirts help our ancestors recognize us and remind us that they walk beside us, offering guidance and support throughout our lives.

The ribbon skirt also symbolizes our sacred connection to Mother Earth and Grandmother Moon. It represents our culture, identity, resilience, and the strength of First Nations women.

Ribbon skirts are worn during Powwows, ceremonies, special occasions, and everyday life as an expression of pride, tradition, and identity.

🧡 National Ribbon Skirt Day – January 4

National Ribbon Skirt Day is observed every January 4. It was inspired by Isabella Kulak, who, at just 10 years old, was shamed in 2020 for wearing her ribbon skirt to school after being told it was not considered formal wear. Her courage sparked a movement that now celebrates Indigenous identity, culture, and pride across Canada.

🌿 Caring for Your Ribbon Skirt
• Wash in cold water and avoid hot water. Turn the skirt inside out and use the delicate cycle to help protect the ribbons.
• Iron on medium heat, placing a cloth over the ribbons.
• Hang or lay flat to dry.

Makoose C Gamik Inc. is looking for a Contract Office Cleaner to help maintain a clean, safe, and welcoming environment at our Long Plain Office.

Position Details:
✨ Monday–Friday (after office hours)
🕒 3 hours per day
💲 $20.00 per hour
📅 Consistent weekly hours

Responsibilities Include:
🧽 General office cleaning (floors, washrooms, garbage removal)
✨ Dusting and wiping surfaces
🧼 Maintaining a clean and sanitary workplace

Requirements:
✔ Reliable vehicle or dependable transportation
✔ Ability to work independently and follow cleaning standards
✔ Dependable, detail-oriented, and reliable
✔ Successful completion of a Criminal Record Check (including Vulnerable Sector Check) and Child Abuse Registry Check
✔ Previous cleaning experience is an asset but not required

This position is ideal for someone looking for steady, part-time evening work with a flexible schedule.
