👩‍⚕️Thursday Nurse Barb Tip

After 72 months of cold and grey, this week we are skipping a lovely spring and vaulting straight into summer, with temperatures into the 30s. With those higher temperatures, things like heat exhaustion and heat stroke are something to watch out for.

Heat exhaustion symptoms include:
☑️Elevated body temperature: 38°C or higher in adults or 37.5°C or higher in children
☑️Nausea and vomiting
☑️Dizziness or fainting
☑️Fast breathing and increased heart rate
☑️Extreme thirst
☑️Decreased urination and dark yellow urine
☑️Changes in behavior in children, such as sleepiness or tantrums

If you see anyone with these symptoms, move them to a cool place and encourage them to drink water.

Heat stroke is a whole other animal.

While heat exhaustion is serious, heat stroke is a medical emergency.

Quite often, heat stroke victims will show signs of altered consciousness, including:

👉Confusion
👉Lack of coordination
👉Flushed skin

These symptoms may progress to a complete loss of consciousness. They may also stop sweating.

To treat a heat stroke victim:
☑️Call 911
☑️Do not give water, as this can increase the risk of aspiration
☑️Move the person to a cool place if possible
☑️Lower body temperature by applying cold water to the largest areas of the body possible
☑️Fan the individual manually or set up a fan if available

Those most susceptible to heat stroke and heat exhaustion are the very young and the elderly. Check on your kids and grandparents. Dress in light-colored, loose clothing, stay hydrated, and treat yourself to foods with a high water content, such as fruits and vegetables. Take breaks during outdoor activities or avoid them altogether during the hottest part of the day.

I know we have ALL been waiting for this, but remember: you need to ease into summer and give your body time to adjust!

Stay healthy, Portage!
XOXO,
Nurse Barb

🌞Summer Safety Tips🌞

As we age, our bodies become less able to regulate body temperature, which can quickly lead to heat related illness.

Here are some tips to stay safe and healthy in the rising temperatures of the summer months.

💧Stay hydrated. Drink eight or more glasses of water or other beverages every day to stay hydrated. Avoid alcoholic and caffeinated beverages as they can leave you dehydrated quickly.

🏠 Stay indoors during extreme heat.
In extreme heat and high humidity, the body must work extra hard to maintain a normal temperature. If you can, limit your outdoor activity to the morning and the evening.

❄ Stay in an air-conditioned place.
Air-conditioning is important when it is hot and humid outside. If you do not have air-conditioning in your home, go somewhere that does. A movie theater, the mall, a friend or family member’s home or a community center are all good options.

👕Know the forecast and dress appropriately. The best clothing to wear in the summertime is loose-fitting and lightweight clothes in natural, breathable fabrics like cotton. Dress in light colors that will reflect the sun and heat instead of darker colors that will attract them.

😎 Protect your skin and eyes.
Wearing sunglasses can block your eyes from harmful UV rays and protect your vision. When outdoors, protect your skin from damage by wearing hats, sunglasses and a sunscreen of SPF 30 or higher and that protects against both UVA and UVB radiation.

💊Know the side effects of your prescriptions. Some medications can cause increased sensitivity to the sun. Talk with your doctor about any concerns or questions.

🔥Know the early signs of heat-related illnesses. Signs to look for may include disorientation, dry skin, excessive tiredness, headache, lethargy, nausea, a flushed face, high body temperature, rapid pulse, dizziness and confusion. Take immediate action if you feel any symptoms coming on.

Stay safe and stay cool!

Every negative stereotype you hear about aging is aimed straight at Future You. Ageism doesn’t just demean; it puts older adults at higher risk for abuse and neglect because their needs are too often dismissed. It’s time to dismantle the biases that silence our elders. Let’s build a society where every stage of life is respected and protected. Stand against ageism and lift up the voices of our older generations! 💜
