What3words is a free app that can help emergency responders find your exact location quickly and accurately. The app divides the world into 3 m × 3 m squares and assigns each square a unique combination of three words (for example: ///filled.count.soap).

In an emergency:

1. Call 911 and open the What3words app.
2. Your location will appear as a blue dot within a highlighted square on the map (you can move the map and select a different square if needed).
3. Read the three words shown at the bottom of the screen, including the three slashes (///), to the dispatcher.

That’s it! By providing your What3words location, emergency responders can be directed to the precise location of the incident, helping them find you faster when every second counts.

Last week, our crew had the opportunity to visit the Township’s Amish schools to meet students and showcase our trucks and firefighting tools. We were so excited to spend time with everyone and appreciate the warm welcome!

As a reminder, we are a volunteer fire department, which means response times can vary depending on where our members are when a call comes in. That’s why it’s so important for every household to practice a home escape plan with two ways out and a designated meeting place outside. 🚒🔥

We’d like to offer our thanks to our fellow firefighters from East Ferris for their quick response to Wasi Lake today. By supplying water to our pumper and helping on the hose lines, they played a major role in containing the fire. Great to have such valuable backup from our neighbours!

April, May and June are typically the most dangerous times for wildfires in Chisholm. If you’re burning, please get a free burning permit and follow the instructions for safe fires.

And remember, the greatest fire hazards occur on dry, windy days before the deciduous trees are fully leafed out and the grass has greened up. Always exercise caution (or delay burning) on those days

We’ve borrowed this message from the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), because it’s relevant in Chisholm this week.

Swift water is powerful and dangerous: flooded areas with just 15 centimetres of fast-moving water can sweep people off their feet, while 30-60 centimetres can wash away vehicles. During this spring flooding period, please stay safe and stay away from swift water in creeks, rivers, ditches and over roads.

Why do we need burning permits? What is the “spring dip”? Watch the video to find out!

Note: The “spring dip” lasts until the leaves fill out on deciduous trees and is the most hazardous time for burning.

Burning is not permitted between 6:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m., meaning it is only allowed in the evening and overnight. This is because humidity levels are typically higher and temperatures are typically lower at night, which helps slow fire spread and makes burning conditions safer and easier to control.

Wildland Urban Interface (WUI) 🔥🌲🏡

Why does that matter?

A WUI is an area where homes, buildings, and other structures are located close to forests, grasslands, and other wildland vegetation.

That means there is a higher risk of fire spreading between natural vegetation and built structures.

In these areas, there is a mix of natural fuels like trees, grass, and brush, and built fuels like homes, barns, sheds, and fences. This creates a serious fire risk for our community.

Throughout the spring and summer, we’ll be sharing helpful tips and resources to support a more FireSmart community.
