My name is toqʷanən.

toqʷanən (toh-kwon-nun) is the original name of Theodosia Inlet.

The inlet and surrounding valley hold many Tla’amin names, the East River qʷatəmanən roughly translates to the river that is the door/entry point to the territory, and the west river xʷa xʷəʔ kʷa comes from the root word for spirit and spiritual power.

The trees and the chum salmon at toqʷanən were legendarily large. The chum were so heavy that they needed to be treated differently, and were BBQ’ed before being hung for smoking. Until the turn of the last century many Tla’amin families maintained seasonal cabins here.

The toqʷanən valley has been altered by 140 years of industry. The waters diverted to power the mill, the landscape heavily logged and subject to a large landslide.

Generations of Tla’amin people have been working to restore this place and its historically large salmon runs. Just last week the Nation celebrated a second hunting and fishing cabin at toqʷanən.

ʔ𝐚𝐠𝐚𝐲𝐪𝐬ə𝐧 (𝐚 𝐠𝐚𝐲𝐪 𝐬ɛ𝐧) 𝐤ʷə𝐭̓ᶿ 𝐧𝐚𝐧 (𝐊𝐰𝐚𝐭𝐡-𝐭𝐡𝐚-𝐧𝐮𝐧)

My name is ʔagayqsən.

ʔagayqsən (a gayq sɛn) means pointed nose and refers to the long sandy pointed spit on the northern end of the island.

ʔagayqsən has long been referred to as Tla'amin's breadbasket for the clams, cockles, deer, fruit, berries and plant medicines it has provided since time immemorial. 3000-year-old pit houses, large middens and canoe skids tell of Tla'amin's continuous relationship to this special place.

ʔagayqsən provided safe harbour for Tla'amin people when the village at t̓išosəm was burned in 1918. Many fled to the island and lived here while the main village was rebuilt.

Many of the Elders today have happy memories of ʔagayqsən, living seasonally there in one of the many family cabins that used to dot the shores.

The island was, for a short time, referred to as Harwood Island.

Qualifications
Education, Training, and Experience

1. Completion of a recognized Early Childhood Education program
Previous work experience in a licensed childcare program would be an asset
2. Knowledge of ɬaʔamɩn culture and ʔayʔaǰuθəm preferred
Individuals with Indigenous ancestry preferred.
3. Successful Criminal Record Check with vulnerable sector screening
4. Recent TB test
5. Class 5 B.C. Driver’s License and acceptable Driver’s Abstract would be an asset
6. First Aid and CPR certification, or willingness to obtain
7. Food Safe certification, or willingness to obtain

1. Working knowledge of children’s developmental stages from 0 to 6 years of age

My name is toχ nəč

toχ nəč (toxw-nutch) refers to how the inlet is strung out long. nəč refers to the rear, toχ nəč means strung out the rear and is the original name of what is now known as Okeover inlet.

The inlet was once home to several village sites and many seasonal cabins. The salmon harvested right at the head of the inlet were known for being oily, delicious and a bit smaller than those from toqʷanən. mə sɛ qʷ purple urchin and ǰuk̓ʷ Indian rice are among the abundant foods present in the inlet.

Tla’amin people have lived at toχ nəč for over 4000 years, with permanent homes at the head of the inlet well into the 1960s - a period when logging and fishing economies were continually supported by Tla’amin harvest and food sovereignty practices.

t̓išosəm — Tla'amin Nation has released Rekindling the Fire, a five-year plan to guide the development of ɬawšəs, the Nation's first ever museum. The plan sets out how Tla'amin will build and care for its collection, tell its story through exhibits, train the people who will run the museum, embed it in daily life, and work alongside Sister Nations and coastal museums as ɬawšəs takes shape.

ɬawšəs means left behind on purpose. It is drawn from the story of the Dog Children, in which a čičyɛ buries an ember in a clam shell so her granddaughter will have the gift of fire. Ever since Tla'amin masks, regalia, drums, and rattles were collected and burned in front of the Roman Catholic Church in the late 1800s, Tla'amin has been fighting to collect and preserve its material culture and heritage.

ɬawšəs is the house where the Nation will keep what was left behind on purpose.
