With the current warm weather the Prince Albert Fire Department has seen a dramatic increase in carbon monoxide alarm responses. Why is that, you may wonder? In many of these cases people are operating portable air conditioner units in their home, which exhaust air out of the home but have no air intake. Air finds the path of least resistance to enter the home, and that is most often down the water heater chimney. Exhaust from the water heater is drawn into the home rather than up and out the chimney. If a clothes dryer is operating it can also often have the same effect. Always ensure you have adequate fresh air supply into your home.

Environmentally friendly vehicles are becoming a common way of life however these hybrid and full electric vehicles with high voltage batteries require special considerations when they are involved in a fire or accident situation. PAFD was happy to host instructor Randy Schmitz to conduct valuable training for our Department. Randy has a wealth of knowledge on extrication and electric vehicles and in early May our staff spent two days gaining information and learning valuable techniques that are used in electric vehicle situations. The training focused on rapid extrication techniques that can be used to quickly protect and remove occupants after a crash involving a hybrid or electric vehicle. We also had the opportunity to practice options to protect occupants and extinguish electric vehicle fires, including vehicles with lithium batteries in thermal runaway.
