Thinkers Lodge National Historic Site Designated a National Historic Site in 2008, Thinkers Lodge is the birthplace of the Pugwash Movement

"Thinkers Lodge" is known as the birthplace of the Pugwash movement, a transnational organization that has led the movement for a nuclear free world. In 1957, at the height of the Cold War, the first Pugwash Conference on Science and World Affairs took place here. Scientists from both sides of the Iron Curtain met to discuss the threat of nuclear weapons and the responsibility of scientists to work for their eradication. This signature event led to a Nobel Prize for Peace, awarded in 1995 and shared by Joseph Rotblat and the Pugwash Conferences on Science and World Affairs. This Nobel Prize together with Cyrus Eaton's Lenin Peace Prize are both on display as part of the interpretive exhibit at the site.

Before the ceremony, a quote from Sir Bertram Russell was read, very appropriate for a wedding and the history of Thinkers Lodge. Not a dry eye in the room while the couple read their vows. The impact of Cyrus Eaton continues...After a terrible fire in Pugwash in 1929, Cyrus paid to clean up the shore line and convert it into Eaton park. He gifted it to the village so that people could enjoy the park for endless years. It is wonderful to see Peace activities there. Harbourfest is a celebration of our space. Games, competitive boat races, music, volleyball, friends meeting friends, visitors enjoying the spectacular view. Tonight great music.
