Culture and history: The Crees of Mistissini have resided in the Mistassini Lake area since time immemorial. In the early 1800's, the community of Mistissini's actual location was just a summer encampment due to the establishment of the Hudson Bay Company fur trading post on sight. The North West Company and other fur traders were also in the vicinity and can be considered contenders in the fur tr

ade with the Hudson Bay Company in those days

PUBLIC NOTICE

Spruce Budworm (BTK) Aerial Spraying Program – Mistissini Territory

Mistissini, Eeyou Istchee, June 22, 2026. — The Cree Nation of Mistissini would like to inform community members that aerial spraying using Bacillus thuringiensis var. kurstaki (Btk) may take place in portions of the Mistissini territory as part of Quebec's spruce budworm protection program.

What is the Spruce Budworm?
The spruce budworm is a forest insect that feeds on the needles of:
- Balsam Fir
- White Spruce
- Red Spruce
- Black Spruce

During outbreak periods, extensive feeding can weaken and kill trees, causing significant damage to forest ecosystems and resources.

What is Btk?
Btk is a naturally occurring soil bacterium used as a biological insecticide to control spruce budworm populations. It specifically targets caterpillars and has been used safely in forestry programs across Canada for many years.

Is Btk Safe?
Health Canada has approved Btk for forestry use and considers it a low-risk product when applied according to approved guidelines. Btk is generally considered safe for:
- Humans
- Pets
- Birds
- Fish
- Other mammals

Because Btk targets the digestive system of specific caterpillars, it does not affect humans or most wildlife.

Drinking Water Safety
Btk spraying is not generally expected to make drinking water unsafe. Scientific reviews have found that:
- Btk is naturally present in the environment.
- Btk breaks down naturally through sunlight and environmental processes.
- Measures are taken to protect lakes, rivers, wetlands, and community water supplies during aerial spraying operations.

Mistissini Treatment Areas

The following treatment blocks have been identified within the Mistissini territory:
Sector Blocks Area (ha)
M50 3 161.3
M51 6 632.7
M51A 1 66.8
M56 4 246.8
OM57 15 1,849.1
Total Area: Approximately 2,956.7 hectares.

Additional Information
Residents with concerns regarding spraying activities near cabins, traplines, lakes, wells, or other water sources are encouraged to contact the appropriate forestry or environmental authorities for additional information regarding treatment schedules and operational safeguards.

The Cree Nation of Mistissini will continue to monitor the program and provide updates to community members as information becomes available.
