Bow Horn Bay Fire Department

Bow Horn Bay Fire Department Serving the Communities of Bowser, Qualicum Bay, and Spider Lake since 1952.

History of the Department

The Bow Horn Bay Fire Department was established in 1952 as the Qualicum Bay Fire Department, but that name was confusing because of the proximity to the Qualicum Beach Fire Department and the fact that the coverage area was expanding. So in 1956, it was renamed the Bow Horn Bay Fire Department (an amalgam for Bowser, Horne Lake Road and Qualicum Bay area). After movin

g several times from one inadequate building to another, a purpose built three-bay hall was erected on Lions Way in Qualicum Bay in 1978. A couple of years later another two bays were added on to the rear of the present hall. We presently have seven vehicles:

Engine 7-2 - 2011 Rosenbauer Pumper
Tender 7-4 - 2000 Freightliner FL80 - 1500 Imp Gallons
Tender 7-5 - 1998 Freightliner FL80 - 1500 Imp Gallons
Rescue 7-6 - 2008 Pierce Pumper
Rescue 7-8 - 1995 Freightliner FL60 mini-pumper
C-700 - 2021 Chevrolet Silverado
C-702 - 2021 Ford F150

Since 1952 we’ve been holdin’ the line,
Bow Horn Bay Fire keepin’ sparks in time.
Dedicated volunteers, hearts burnin’ bright,
Showin’ up ready when we get the call at night.

Small town hearts with a fearless soul,
One crew, one family, we rise through it all
We’re volunteers but we fight like pros,
Through the smoke and embers when the winds blow

Rain or thunder, blackened sky,
We stand together side by side.
Through every storm and every flame,
Bow Horn Bay remember our name.

We’re the heart of the island, we’re the night and day,
We’re the crew that shows up when the world turns grey.
Cruisin’ the Island Highway, lights ablaze,
Bow Horn Bay Fire ’til the end of our days!

Shelby’s barkin’, sirens wail,
Red lights streakin’ through the midnight sky.
Down the island highway, through the coastal rain
Bow Horn Bay Fire—lead the way!

Along the shore where the cold tides roll,
This department’s stitched into the island soul.
Every handshake earned, every lesson learned,
Every call reminds us why the fire still burns.

Rain or thunder, blackened sky,
We stand together side by side.
When the radios crackle and the tones ring out,
There ain’t a single one of us backing out.

We’re the heart of the island, we’re the night and day,
We’re the crew that shows up when the world turns grey.
Cruisin’ the Island Highway, lights ablaze,
Bow Horn Bay Fire ’til the end of our days!

Through the rain-soaked nights and the cedar smoke,
Through the hard-hit calls and the fear we choke,
And when the flames rise high against the bay,
You’ll hear those sirens cut through the grey—

We’re the heart of the island, we’re the night and day,
We’re the ones still standin’ when the skies turn grey.
Cruisin’ the Island Highway, lights ablaze,
Bow Horn Bay Fire ’til the end of our days!

Ok, campfires are back… for now.
Practice safe campfire.

Due to current and forecast conditions bringing cooler temperatures, improved humidity values and an overall reduction in wildfire hazard, the Coastal Fire Centre has decided to rescind the Category 1 (campfire) prohibition, effective May 15th at 12 p.m. (noon) PDT.

Category 2 and Category 3 open fires remain prohibited throughout the Coastal Fire Centre’s jurisdiction in addition to select equipment and activities.

Some local authorities (Municipalities, Regional Districts, First Nations, and Parks) will be maintaining the prohibition of campfires within their jurisdiction.

Well, it just goes to show how dry it is out there. It's super early in the year but a total fire ban is coming this Thursday, May 7th starting at noon.
This means no fires of any kind, including campfires. Please respect this ban, it is there for a reason.
