Planning to tackle weeds around your property? While there are plenty of safe and effective ways to manage weeds in driveways, landscaping, and around hedges, using a propane torch is not one of them.

Flame weeding is a high-risk activity year-round. Even if the fire appears out, intense heat can ignite hidden roots or leave smouldering spots that can flare up later. There have been unfortunate fires in the province that have resulted from this.

Help protect your home and your community by choosing safer weed-control options.

Roofs and gutters filled with dry leaves, pine needles, and small branches can increase your home’s wildfire risk. Clearing this debris helps reduce the chance of embers igniting your property.

Take a few minutes to remove combustible materials from your roof and gutters—it’s a simple step that makes a big difference.

As you get into spring yardwork, here are some FireSmart pruning & landscaping tips to help protect your home from wildfire risk before fire season begins.

✂️ Prune tree branches that hang low (within ~2 metres of the ground) so fires can’t climb upward through “ladder fuels.”
🌿 Space out plantings and keep them away from buildings — don’t let shrubs touch siding or overhang roofs.
🚫 Avoid bark, pine needles, or wood chips immediately next to buildings, since they ignite more easily.
🏡 Use gravel, rocks, or stone mulches around the foundation; farther out, mature compost can work well.
🌱 Mow regularly to keep grass under about 10 cm; too short isn’t ideal either, as very dry or sparse turf dries out faster.
🍃 Clear winter debris like dead leaves, twigs, branches, and dried seed pods — especially near buildings, under rooflines, and in gutters.
Taking the time now to prune, remove dead fuels, and adjust your yard layout can significantly reduce wildfire risk as fire season approaches.

Did you know your wood fence could be a wildfire risk? Combustible fences and boardwalks can act like a wick, leading fire straight to your home.

Protect your home with these tips:

✅ Add a 1.5m non-combustible break (like a metal gate) between wood fences and your house
✅ Keep fences in good condition – replace damaged or rotting wood
✅ Clear debris and maintain vegetation around the fence

Summer is around the corner. A friendly reminder to safely charge your e-bike. Improper handling of lithium-ion batteries can increase the risk of thermal runaway, which can lead to fire or explosion.

Here are some tips to keep your e-bike battery safe and healthy:

1. Purchase your e-bike from a reputable e-bike brand. E-bike batteries and chargers should be purchased directly from the company where you got your e-bike. Avoid cheap after-market batteries—many fires start with low-quality, high-voltage options.
2. Don’t charge overnight or unattended. Check the battery periodically while charging. Once it’s done, unplug it and store it safely.
3. Store and charge the battery at room temperature in a moisture-free environment away from flammable materials.
4. Don’t cover the battery or charger. Allow for proper airflow and avoid placing objects on top.
5. When transporting your e-bike, remove the battery to protect it from damage.
6. If you won’t be riding for a month or more, store the battery partially charged.

Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions when charging, storing, and maintaining your e-bike battery.
