Today, we come together to observe the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, a day that honours the children who never returned home, the Survivors of residential schools, and the families and communities impacted by this dark chapter in Canada’s history. It’s a time to reflect on the painful legacy of residential schools and recognize the importance of reconciliation. By wearing orange, we acknowledge that Every Child Matters and help raise awareness of the generational impacts on Indigenous communities, as the orange shirt is a symbol of the stripping away of culture, freedom, and self-esteem experienced by Indigenous children over generations.

At Gwaii Haanas, reconciliation is more than just a word, it's about action and partnership. The Haida Nation and Gwaii Haanas work together to cooperatively manage the land, ensuring decisions are made with mutual respect and a shared vision. This long-standing relationship represents reconciliation in practice, a living example of how we can work together for a better future, rooted in respect and understanding.
