🌹Red Dress Day🌹, marked annually on May 5th as the National Day of Awareness for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls, and 2SLGBTQQIA+ Peoples (MMIWG2S+), honors victims and survivors of gender-based violence. It acts as a call to action against disproportionate violence affecting Indigenous communities, symbolized by hanging red dresses to represent missing loved ones.

Indigenous women and girls in Canada are up to 12 times more likely to be murdered or go missing than their non-Indigenous counterparts, with over 60% experiencing physical or sexual violence.

The significance of “red” is chosen because it is believed to call back the spirits of the missing and murdered, symbolizing blood and connection to life.
