Now you have an opportunity to let us know if you would also like messages via Facebook still.

Good afternoon everyone,
Teams have been working hard at the school to have us in as soon as possible.

Building occupancy requires a number of systems to be fully functional as well as all structures must be completed to a high standard to ensure the safety of staff and students. In consultation with Station One Architects we have confirmed that we will be delaying the opening of QJS until the week of September 12,2022, to ensure all elements for occupancy can be achieved to the standard we expect for staff and students.

We plan to have staff on site September 12, 2022, and students will begin with Grade 8 Orientation Wednesday, September 14, and all students at school Thursday, September 15, 2022. This represents a two day delay to the timeline we had planned, meaning students will be out of school two additional days. The architects are confident this timeline will be sufficient to ensure the building is suitable for students. The building team will continue to work throughout the evenings and weekends until the building is fully complete; however, this will not impact student attendance.

This week and next we will send out detailed information about the September 14 and 15 day, for grade 8 orientation and grade 9 start up. We will do everything we can to ensure a positive start for students.

Take Care and Stay Well,
Patricia Simpson
QJS Principal

Here is the May 27 QJS Newsletter.

Checkout the photos of our first every 215 Memorial Walk remembering all those children who never returned home from the Residential Schools. Special thanks to members of the Lhtako Band, Ecole Red Bluff Lhtako and Lakeview schools who took time from their days to join us as we walked in the footsteps of the ancestors.

Also important bus information about bus passes.

Have a good week.

New QJS Mascot (QJS 3.0)
We are excited to announce that the new QJS Mascot will be the RIVER HAWKS

QJS RIVER HAWKS
Rationale behind the decision and to be considered in the logo design:
• Lakes and Rivers a huge part of our local culture
o Lhtako- People of the 3 Rivers (where the 3 rivers meet)
o Nazko – river flowing from the south (Naz=south, koh=river
o Kluskus – lhoos= half of a whitefish k’us=lake
• Quesnel is “about” the rivers: Indigenous community, nature and play, gold mining/gold rush, and tourism
• River Hawks is a nickname for Osprey (locally found raptor)
• Large, strong raptor bird = formidable opponent for sports teams
• The new school has two rivers represented running through along the floor of the new building
• High soaring = metaphor for setting high goals
• Far seeing = metaphor for youth looking to the future
• Sounds good as a chant/cheer (3 syllables)
• Easy to visualize as a mascot
• New building has huge center logs which might provide a setting for a future art sculpture (flying or nesting osprey)
• Unique mascot in BC schools (no other school has this)
• Graphic Design: Must include representation of 3 rivers, osprey
Colours could include: grey or black (osprey colors), blue (water/sky), green (land), white (snow), gold (Cariboo history)
-Old QJS colours were Blue and Yellow/Gold
-Possible new colours: Grey (or black) Blue and Gold
-official school colours will be decided in consultation with committee and staff, including PE department in order to design uniforms (dirt/sweat considerations)

Concept Design – Phase Two will be a request for designs which closes April 27. Should be submitted to the office at QJS or emailed to [email protected] . The committee will again meet to select the final design.
