🔥 The Cycle of Life: Fire Stories 🔥

🪑 Visitors who shared reflections at the Simpson River red chairs often wrote about the importance of patience, healing and giving themselves room to grow.

"Remember that we are all of the earth”
-Carly, Casper, and Bug

🥾 One of the first things you'll notice on the Simpson River Trail is the boot brush.

It's a reminder that periods of change can leave landscapes vulnerable. After a fire, recovering ecosystems are especially susceptible to invasive plants, whose seeds can be carried in on muddy boots and gear.

As forests recover after fire, they need space and time to renew. We can help by doing our part to protect these fragile landscapes.

🪥 Before you head down the trail, take a moment to brush your boots.

🐹 On World Food Day, let’s meet one of the hardest-working residents of the Canadian Rockies… The Pika!

🍃 While bears spend the fall building fat reserves, a pika can make hundreds or even thousands of trips carrying mouthfuls of vegetation back to its food cache. These piles of vegetation are carefully dried in the sun before storing them in "haypiles" beneath rocky slopes. This pantry of selective vegetation will keep a Pika sustained for the whole winter.

When deep snow blankets the Canadian Rockies, Pikas take shelter beneath talus slopes and survive the winter by feeding on the plant caches they've spent months collecting. The snow acts as an insulating blanket, helping keep them warm through the long mountain winter.

Next time you're hiking in alpine terrain, listen for the pika's sharp "eep!" call and keep an eye out for a tiny bundle of fur carrying a mouthful of vegetation. You might just catch one preparing its winter pantry.

📸 Have you ever spotted a pika in the mountains?

💚 On World Mental Health Day, take a moment to slow down and connect with the world around you.

🌲 The forest has a way of helping us reconnect with ourselves.

The sound of the wind through the trees, the scent of pine, and the rhythm of a deep breath can remind us to pause, be present, and appreciate the world around us.

Wherever you are today, step outside and connect with nature in a way that feels right for you.

🏕️ Thinking of squeezing in one more camping trip before the snow flies?

🔋 Don’t forget battery safety!

This year's Fire Prevention Week campaign from the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) highlights the importance of lithium-ion battery safety.

Many of the devices we rely on outdoors, including headlamps, satellite communicators, phones, power banks, and cameras, are powered by lithium-ion batteries.

When winter camping:
🔋 Keep batteries warm by storing them close to your body or inside your sleeping bag at night
🔌 Use manufacturer-approved chargers and cables whenever possible
🔥 Charge devices on a hard, non-flammable surface and never inside bedding, a sleeping bag, or under clothing
⚠️ Stop using a battery if it becomes unusually hot, swollen, damaged, or emits an unusual odour
♻️ Recycle damaged or unwanted batteries properly. Never throw lithium-ion batteries into a campfire or regular garbage.

A little preparation can help keep your winter adventure safe and enjoyable.
