Please note that the cruise ship National Geographic Explorer is scheduled to be in Red Bay tomorrow, Sunday, August 30th. As per cruise ship and Transport Canada protocol, we kindly ask that all boats be moved away from the Red Bay dock by 6:00pm this evening. As always, the Town of Red Bay appreciates your cooperation and understanding in this matter.

The Town of Red Bay would like to say Congratulations and a HUGE “THANK YOU” to our very own Cindy Gibbons today! After 25 years with Parks Canada and a wonderful career working to move our beautiful home forward, including seeing our town and site declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2013, Cindy worked her last day today, and will be enjoying a well deserved retirement. What a contribution this wonderful lady has made to Red Bay and Labrador! Your awesome work is so appreciated Cindy and the Town of Red Bay is so very fortunate to have had you dedicate your career to its advancement and success. Well done lovely lady, well done indeed !!! 😊

Good day Red Bay! What a beautiful August day out there! 😊. The Town of Red Bay and the Red Bay Heritage Committee are currently looking at options and opportunities available to us regarding the Orange Lodge. We’ve had some initial assessment work done and will be having a meeting around the middle of September.

We would like to give any resident the opportunity to express any concerns, questions, ideas, or thoughts regarding this community treasure, either in writing, or verbally at the Town Office, by Friday, September 11/26.

This item will also be included on the agenda of our next town council meeting and you are free to submit something in writing or request to speak at the council meeting should you have anything to add on the matter of the Lodge.

It is believed by many that this is a valuable piece of our community history and with some TLC and maintenance, the building and its story would be of huge interest to those visiting from near and far.

No changes or work is imminent at this point, so this is an opportunity to voice your thoughts. The Heritage Committee is in a position to use assessments from local experts and contractors to look into funding options and would like to proceed if possible in early fall. But we would like anyone with concerns or questions to bring them to our attention before proceeding with any applications or action.

The family of the late Gertie Yetman would like to express a sincere and heartfelt “THANK YOU” to everyone who reached out through the last number of challenging days. While nothing can take away the pain of losing someone as wonderful as Gertie, the cards, messages, visits, and expressions of sympathy, received from so many, is indeed overwhelming and so very appreciated.

I will add here that I spoke with Rhonda, who was visiting Quaint Quarters with her friend Jackie. Rhonda expressed how odd it seemed to walk in without her Mom. We agreed that we were both happy that her Mom got to experience Quaint Quarters, right here in Red Bay, before her passing. This place was taylor made for Gertie. To sit with her favorite beverage / treat and chat with family and friends was cherished moments indeed, as she neared the final months of her time with us. The sea gulls calling in the background with the ocean splashing just feet away had to be soothing for the soul. We sure hope it was, and I’m sure Rhonda will continue to enjoy this new Red Bay gem, right on our waterfront, and honour her Mom with every visit.

“THANK YOU” everyone from Gertie’s family. We will forever remember your kindness and generosity in our time of loss. God Bless … 🙏❤️🙏❤️

What a day in Red Bay! A celebration of life in so many ways. NunatuKavut Treaty Day began with a lovely moment of silence for our lovely lady Gertie. Thank you to the NCC for that respectful and kind gesture. It was a beautiful Labrador Day with sunshine and a nice breeze through most of the day. A beautiful day to celebrate Gertie’s amazing life and say goodbye to our wonderful friend.

Thank you to our ever awesome Basqador Committee who always, always, always pull off events that are second to none. Like any event of this magnitude, there is much planning and work by all involved, and the organization and cooperation that the NunatuKavut Community Council brought today was nothing short of spectacular. Friendships were made and relationships formed that will carry forward years into the future.

Treaty Day 2026 was a huge success and it was especially great to see the smiles and joy that this day brought to the children, our youth, our future. We hope you’ll come back and do it all again soon. Treaty Day happens on August 21st of each year and different communities are chosen each year, we hope you enjoyed our hospitality for your 2026 celebrations … we absolutely loved having you! 😊

Good Morning Red Bay. On Monday, August 17th, I left the office to do some work at our pumphouse and get water samples for chlorine testing. I decided to drop in on Gertie Yetman and grab a quick water sample from her kitchen faucet. Of course, Gertie welcomed me in as always, and after apologizing for not having her teeth in 😊, we were quickly into conversation regarding a few things, including her Dad’s passing many years ago. Anyone who knew Gertie knows how easily conversation came and how much she enjoyed a friends company and a chat at anytime.

Little did I know that a few hours later, our friend and beloved daughter of Labrador, would be gone. 😔. I cannot even describe how much this lovely lady will be missed in this community. She was a constant at community functions. She ran and organized our municipal, provincial, and federal elections, she volunteered on committees, and so much more. She loved life, she dearly loved her family, she loved Red Bay, and Red Bay loved her. She bravely made her way through many health challenges in the later stages of her life but she never lost that vibrant presence, sense of humour, and strong human connection with those around her.

Red Bay will miss you Gertie! 😔. We send our sincere condolences to Sandra, Junior, Colleen, and Rhonda, along with her extended family and friends.
