Construction started this week, and we're not telling you what it is.

We'll share a progress photo every week so you can guess. That's the game. We keep the secret; you offer the theories.

The depot is open as usual while the work happens. It'll be a little messier than normal, but your empties are still very welcome.

Guesses in the comments. Go. 😀

There's something different about learning history when you're standing in front of it.

This week, our community session visited Veterans Voices of Canada at Parkland Mall, and it was a meaningful few hours. The museum covers a remarkable range of Canadian military history, from the Second World War through to Afghanistan, including displays on the Holocaust and the lesser-known story of Canadian volunteers who served in Vietnam. Uniforms, artifacts, personal stories, and the kind of detail that textbooks rarely capture.

Our group had the chance to meet two veterans and the museum's curator, hear some of that history firsthand, and thank the veterans personally for their service. Watching people take that in, ask questions, and make real connections with people and stories that shaped this country, that's what community participation looks like.

If you haven't visited Veterans Voices of Canada at Parkland Mall, it's worth your time. It's free, it's local, and it's the kind of place that stays with you.

Imagine how much rain you'd have collected if you had a rain barrel last week?!

We've partnered with RainBarrel.ca to bring a rain barrel fundraiser to the COSMOS community, and there are two good reasons to order one before June 12.

First, the practical one: The City of Red Deer is currently offering a rebate of 50% of the cost of a rain barrel, up to $50 back per barrel. Even if you received a rebate in a previous year, you may be eligible for one more. That makes a rain barrel a genuinely smart purchase for your yard and your water bill.

Second, the community one: every barrel sold puts $10 toward COSMOS programs that create real opportunities for people with disabilities right here in Central Alberta. It's a small action that connects to something meaningful.

Here's how it works: order and prepay online by June 12, then pick up your barrel on June 24. That's the one pickup day, so plan ahead. Home delivery is also available for an added fee if June 24 doesn't work for you.

Order and find the link to the rebate application at: https://rainbarrel.ca/cosmoscss/

Herbs for cooking and flowers for beauty. Spring in the residences looks like this.

Watering the hanging baskets. Planting mint. Watching the petunias come in.

Gardening is one of those things that's good for anyone, providing routine, fresh air, and something to tend to and watch grow.

Gratitude is easy to feel. It takes a bit more to put it into words, or in this case, onto a poster.

One of our recent sessions was all about expressing gratitude through art. The posters people made were colourful, thoughtful, and genuinely their own.

Creative expression is one of the ways people find their voice, build confidence, and connect with what matters to them. This was a good afternoon for all of that.

Red Deer has a lot of history built right into its streets. This week's community session explored the Bronze Statue tour downtown and took time to stop at the cenotaph.

It wasn't just a walk. It was a chance to be part of the city, to notice things, learn things, and move through spaces that belong to everyone.

Next up: a visit to the Veterans Museum at Parkland Mall. More to come on that one.

Patterns are everywhere. Most people just walk right past them.

Today's photography lesson had one focus: symmetry and patterns. The classroom was right outside the door.

A corrugated sign post. A sidewalk seam that curves just so. A perforated metal pole. Ordinary stuff that turns into something worth looking at twice when you know what to look for.

Learning to see the world differently is a real skill. And building real skills is what a lot of this work is actually about.

There's something grounding about watching a home take shape, knowing a family is waiting for it.

Becky and Maryanne recently stopped by the latest Habitat for Humanity Red Deer & Restore Habitat for Humanity build to check in on the progress and encourage the crew doing the work.

Habitat for Humanity builds affordable, quality homes alongside families who might not otherwise have access to safe, stable housing. What makes their model unique is that the families who receive those homes contribute their own time and labour to the build, making it a genuinely collaborative effort from the foundation up.

After a very serious rock-paper-scissors showdown on site, Maryanne (paper covers rock, no further questions) earned the hard hat while Becky took the photo.

Seeing those walls go up and hearing about the families who will make those spaces home was a good reminder of what happens when community organizations show up for each other and for the people they serve.

A rising tide lifts all boats.
