Treaty 6, 150 years since its signing in 1876…
Moosomin First Nation

In 1955, the provincial government initiated a Saskatchewan Golden Jubilee project that tasked schools throughout the province to research and document their district’s local history. This project included schools located on First Nations reserves throughout the province.

The local histoires compiled by schools located on reserves have a similar format and typically include then and now comparisons of early and contemporary lifestyles; church and school history; wartime and veteran information; drawings and/or photographs; and lists of students, teachers, and chiefs.

These photographs are part of the Moosomin First Nation School’s Saskatchewan Golden Jubilee project of 1955 (Micro. R-2.75).

In 1936, the Provincial Government of Saskatchewan established the Saskatchewan Book Bureau. The Depression had made it difficult for schools to fund their libraries, especially in rural areas. The goal of the Book Bureau was to make schoolbooks available to students across the province at a uniform low price.

boasted the Hoeschen-Wentzler Brewing Company, Saskatoon’s first brewery, in the Saskatoon Star-Phoenix on March 3, 1908.

This impressive five-storey brewery (R-A7409) was the first brewery to operate in Saskatoon. Co-owned by Ben Hoeschen and Fred Wentzler, the Hoeschen-Wentzler Brewing Company opened to the public in December 1907. Construction costs were reported to have surpassed $100 000.

By 1914, Fred Wentzler had left the operation and the company rebranded and became the Saskatoon Brewing Company. It was the only brewery in Saskatoon to survive the prohibition years and was taken over by Labatt’s in 1960.

Treaty 6, 150 years since its signing in 1876…
Peter Chapman First Nation

The Dominion Lands Act of 1872 was designed to establish policies for the settlement of Western Canada, including policies for the administration of land grants to homesteaders, railways, municipalities, religious groups, and First Nations reserves.

The Provincial Archives of Saskatchewan preserves large township registers that can indicate land usage over time specific to a quarter-section. Shown here is an example of entries made for James Smith and Cumberland District for Township 47 Range 20 West of the Second Meridian (47-20-W2). These lands were originally set aside for today’s Peter Chapman First Nation in the Fort a la Corne area.

Do you have a favourite of the four Western Development Museums?

The WDM North Battleford location was the first to have opened its doors to the public, in 1947. Many modifications and additions have been made since then, including since these photographs were taken in 1973 (R-C8564, R-C8565, R-C8570, R-C8578).

It’s that time of year again… the Queen City Ex!

From the 1960s until 2009, the Queen City Ex was known as Buffalo Days. Not only did the rides, activities, and refreshments embrace the Buffalo Days theme – but participants did, too! To help inspire thematic outfits, a Buffalo Days “Costume Ideas” pamphlet was published in 1979 (R-E474).

What’s your favourite memory of Buffalo Days?
