Treaty 6, 150 years since its signing in 1876…
Mistawasis First Nation

Preserved at the Provincial Archives of Saskatchewan is a rich collection of stories told by Chief Thunderchild to Edward Ahenakew in 1922. Ahenakew’s notes – written in English and Cree syllabics – formed the basis for his book Voices of the Plains Cree. Ruth M. Buck edited the stories with additional help of Stanley Cuthand who translated Ahenakew’s syllabics.

Both Ruth M. Buck’s and Edward Ahenakew’s fonds at the Provincial Archives of Saskatchewan include the earliest drafts of Chief Thunderchild’s stories, including the excerpt shown here (R-20, I.5), one of a handful of stories involving Mistawasis.

This archival record is an important reminder that many archival collections touch upon a variety of subjects. Many of the records shared in this Treaty 6 commemorative series could be of interest to more than one Indigenous group.

Today’s photograph introduces you to a long-lost beauty:
the Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR) gardens once located on South Railway Street in Regina.

The CPR developed a plan to beautify the grounds surrounding its train stations to improve its corporate image. Station agents and other employees maintained the attractive gardens and were even awarded corporate prizes for their hard work.

CPR Agent Thomas E. Birbeck established the gardens around Regina’s station circa 1895, when this photograph was taken. The CPR agent and his garden were thoroughly appreciated by the community, as evidenced by a short piece published in the November 4, 1897 edition of the Regina Leader:

“The citizens of Regina will regret Mr. Birbeck’s removal while rejoicing that he has been found worthy of promotion… Good-bye Tom. Sweet-scented ever may be the air you breath. May your life blossom with increasing prosperity and success. May your bed be a couch of lilies, your table ever adorned with the pinks of perfection, and your meals seasoned with mushrooms. May your graveyard be a garden of roses, --but Heaven forfend the time.”

Treaty 6, 150 years since its signing in 1876…
Montreal Lake First Nation

In celebration of Saskatchewan’s Golden Jubilee in 1955, many communities compiled local history books. It was likely Miss Betty Lumley who compiled The Nameless Land, a local history booklet for the area “sometimes called Montreal Lake after the name which the school bears, but most frequently referred to as Fournier’s Station” (S-Q 156).

Included in the ten-page booklet are 33 photographs accompanied by historical and biographical information of early residents, including the Beatty, Brown, Fournier, Poitras, and Ross families.

The first automobiles in Vonda parading about in 1910 (R-A19747).
Note the term “Pleasure Party” used to describe the occasion. Is this a term you’ve heard before for these group road trips?

The back of the photograph identifies Jack Currie, Leo Brothers, and Frank Colleau as party participants.

Treaty 6, 150 years since its signing in 1876…
Makwa Sahgaiehcan First Nation

Campbell Innes, a schoolteacher and historian based out of Battleford, was a founding member of the Battleford Historical Society formed in 1924, which later morphed into the Canadian North West Historical Society in 1927. His research and documentation, now preserved at the Provincial Archives of Saskatchewan, was largely conducted in the Battleford area. These photographs taken at Makwa Sahgaiehcan, or Loon Lake, circa 1940 (R-A5671 to R-A5673) can be found amongst his records.

Only one individual has been identified: Chachakayou, seen sitting in front of a tipi. Do you recognize any of the other individuals?

Treaty 6, 150 years since its signing in 1876…
Lac La Ronge First Nation

The Dominion Lands Act of 1872 was designed to encourage settlement in western Canada, including establishing policies for administering land grants to individual homesteaders, railways, municipalities, religious groups, and First Nations reserves.

The Provincial Archives of Saskatchewan preserves what are called “homestead files”. These files outline the administrative history of Saskatchewan lands granted under the Act, including those specific to First Nation reserves. Shown here is a selection of pages found in the homestead file for Four Portages Reserve No. 157C of Lac La Ronge First Nation (S 42.5423896).
