One of my favourite celebrations of the year - Regina Public SD Long Service Reception !

I had the privilege of being on stage with my Trustee colleagues, Board Chair Adam Hicks and Director Haarmann, to honour the the amazing humans who have 25 years of service with Regina Public Schools, and acknowledge those who are retiring ♥️📚

The new 25-Year Club members were gifted a limited original silkscreen print entitled “Bob” by well-known local artist Wilf Perreault.

Our retirees each received a certificate, a Shared Values pin, and a custom-crafted wooden plaque by Sticks & Doodles, a local gem biz in our community ♥️

Warmest CONGRATULATIONS to everyone we honoured ♥️ Thank you for your service in education and in the wellbeing of our children.

The conversations I had with recipients and their partners and families last night fills my heart. The pride and joy in the room is so meaningful to me.

Thank you to our team who organized this evening. Your hard work is seen and appreciated ♥️

Regina Public School board of Trustees held our final full meeting this week. We have one more meeting to vote on the budget on June 23.

It’s been an interesting and challenging school year but we worked together as a team, debated respectfully, made tough decisions, and as always, prioritized students.

We also value our staff and hope they feel appreciated. We see, hear and recognize all the good things happening in our school division - THANK YOU to our team of strong dedicated individuals ♥️

Thank you to parents, families and caregivers who trust us to make good decisions ensuring your child feels safe, cared for, and know they belong. This is really important to me as I was one of those kids who moved around a lot and needed to feel this ♥️

Last but always top of mind, thank you to our students who I love seeing when I visit our schools, who come up and say hi and talk with me, who give me cards and drawings, who love their teachers, who support their peers and lead with kindness everyday ♥️

This week we participated in a learning session then raised our Pride Flag to celebrate and recognize our 2SLGBTQIA+ community.

Diversity makes us stronger 🏳️‍🌈♥️

Oh my heart! ♥️ Our Campbell Collegiate students who lead the Stargivers Initiative were the first place recipients of the Public Schools of Saskatchewan STUDENT CITIZENSHIP Awards!

Huge congratulations to them! They work hard throughout the year, balancing their school extra-curr and family activities with volunteering to help the most vulnerable members of our communities in Regina ♥️

They raise funds, pack meals, organize bbqs & hand out food at events (and so much more!) - all to help provide the necessities for those who don’t have enough.

Fun fact: I have been following Stargivers for years now and my son Alex was part of this initiative when he went Campbell 😊 So I’m very familiar with and supportive of all their evening and weekend food runs, supplies shopping, and events ♥️

These students are changing the world and I’m so proud and inspired ♥️

THANK YOU to the teachers and parents who encourage and empower students to make a difference.

THANK YOU to Public Schools of Sask. for creating this opportunity to recognize students and the incredible things they do!

It’s that time of year… I’ve been attending last SCC meetings of the school year!!! How did it all go by SO FAST????!!!!

Tonight was Arcola School - always dear to my heart as I attended Arcola from grades 2-6 ♥️
Mrs. Fehler, Ms.Krenoski, Mrs.Berger, Mr.Maupin, Mr. Ingham (“Spare me Matilda!” - who remembers this???!!!)

I was also the tetherball champ, despite Harald MacArthur’s attempts to take the title! 😁

Fantastic School if you are looking to enroll your children!

Thank you to Principal Hainstock for leading this school and making such an impact - SCC members had to promise to hold back tears at the news of her heading to a new school in the fall! 😊

Happy Pride! 🏳️‍🌈

Everyday, but especially this month, I recognize and support the 2SLGBTQIA+ community, and reaffirm the importance of creating communities where everyone feels safe, respected, and valued. Knowing that you belong, in every way, matters ♥️

This is so important in schools for all our students, and of course for every person of every age - please know you are accepted and deserve to be treated with dignity. Everyone deserves the freedom to be themselves without fear of judgment or discrimination 🧡

While we celebrate identity, courage, love, and community this month, we understand that inclusion is not a one-time action - it’s EVERYDAY… through our words, our actions, and how we show up for one another 💛

I look forward to all the celebrations and activities this month and hearing your stories! THANK YOU for sharing your journey, your voices, and your strength 💙

You are an important part of our community, and you belong here.

♥️🧡💛💙💚💜🩵🩷

Happy 15th Anniversary to Campbell Business!

It is always so impressive how hard these students work and the amazing educators who support, encourage, empower, these students! They learn, grow, and get to experience many different aspects of the world of business. They connect with the business community and the experts to learn from ♥️

It is always an honour for me to be invited to these events to join in the celebration, and see the work and dedication that goes into everything our school staff and students do.

What I enjoy most is talking to the students 😊
I had students come up to introduce themselves, students I met at the SaskAi conference, students I met thru being involved with the UofR Enactus-Elevate XP, and Hill & Levene School of Business students.

I convocated from the UofR with a business degree, so it’s in my blood. I am just so darn proud of these students!!! ♥️

Regina Public Schools recently signed an MOU with the Office of the Treaty Commissioner (OTC) to support collaboration between the division and the OTC.

I appreciate that in my role I get to be a part of a school division that holds Indigenous Education and Treaty learning for ALL students a high priority.

So many things to be proud of as part of Regina Public and our local community as a whole. There is still so much work to be done but we are truly moving in the right direction.

May is ASIAN HERITAGE MONTH ♥️
(Long post but I hope you find it’s worth your time)…

In my role as Trustee, I have met and talked with many Asian students who opened up to me about life here, life back home, what they love about living here in Regina, and what they miss from back home 🥺

Talking with the EAL students at Campbell Collegiate and with the grade 5-8 students at École Wilfrid Walker at the Anti-Racism Symposium, have been opportunities that were not only a learning experience for them, but it was also a meaningful way for me to let kids know they are not alone, in their feelings, their worries, their fears. That it’s ok to ask for help and that they should feel safe in school. Whether they’re new to Canada, have been here a few years or many years, I get it. I was in their shoes.

My family came to Canada through Malaysia as Vietnamese refugees. I was 3 when we left Vietnam in a small boat in the middle of the night. My mom was 8.5 months pregnant. We were part of a generation of people who left everything, after the war. They got on boats, not knowing if they would survive the sea, the pirates, or what was waiting on the other side. Between 1978 and 1981, over a million Vietnamese people fled. So many died trying.

Those of us who made it were held in refugee camps. No clean water, food, medicine… people were still dying. My brother was dying, with no milk or much water his first few days of life. My Mom was very close to death. She was still very weak from giving birth to my brother on the boat while at sea, after the pirates robbed us. My Dad worked odd jobs throughout the night just to buy medicine. And spent the days everyday lined up for hours for food and water for us.

And we were the lucky ones. In 1980 Canada opened its doors to us after surviving a year at the refugee camp. Strangers chose us. Specifically a church in Regina. These are incredible, kind, generous people who gave us a chance at a new life here. We wanted to be worthy of that choice.

Moving and changing schools often, I grew up navigating racism, poverty, and the particular loneliness of being the kid who did not quite fit anywhere. I also grew up watching my parents work harder than anyone I have ever known, and build a life with almost nothing. They gave me and my little bro, Nguyen Thai Binh Duong (Pacific Ocean in Vietnamese) everything.

That is what Asian families do. They sacrifice in ways that do not make the news. They build quietly, consistently, and with extraordinary dignity. I am SO PROUD of my parents ♥️

Today, Canadians of Asian heritage represent nearly 20% of our population. In arts, science, medicine, law, business, sport, and government. In classrooms and boardrooms. In kitchens and community organizations. In places you see, and places you do not.

I see so much potential and a beautiful future for students who came here seeking a better life. And I see how they are cared for and supported by our school teachers and all staff.

I’m so happy to be part of the Asian community.

But still, anti-Asian racism and discrimination exist. Honouring Asian Heritage Month means we understand that contribution and hardship are both part of the story.

I share my story because a student or a newcomer of any age, in a Regina classroom or workplace right now might need to see someone who looks like her, who came from where she came from, and who found a way to belong without erasing herself. I want to be a good example ♥️

To every Asian Canadian: YOUR STORY MATTERS. It shapes who you are. Healing and growth happen. I am who I am today because of my experiences, my past, my lessons learned. And because of those who were there for me each step of the way. I am resilient, confident and work hard to give back to my community everyday.

To Regina, to Saskatchewan, to this country that took in a really, really cute little girl 😊 and her family from a refugee camp in Malaysia: THANK YOU from my whole heart ♥️

To my community and all who support me and trust me to give our students, your kids, the best education experience - THANK YOU ♥️

Happy Asian Heritage Month 🇻🇳🇨🇦
