It’s International Museum Week!

Museums connect us to our past, inspire creativity, and bring people together through shared stories, cultures, and experiences. They help us understand where we’ve come from and imagine where we’re going.

Did you know the Government House Historical Society played a key role in preserving Government House and creating the museum we enjoy today?

In 1969, a dedicated group of community members successfully lobbied to save Saskatchewan House. Their efforts led to the building being designated a historic site in 1971, restoration beginning in 1977, and reopened as Government House Museum in 1980. This Instrumental group became the Government House Historical Society 1981.

The Society also helped furnish the museum by tracking down original Government House artifacts that were auctioned off in 1945 and acquiring other pieces from the 1905 era to bring Saskatchewan’s history to life.

This International Museum Week, why not stop by Government House, explore the museum, and take in our feature and art exhibits? History is waiting to be discovered!

Are you looking for an opportunity to give back to your community? Government House Historical Society is currently recruiting volunteers.

Are you looking for an opportunity for inter-generational volunteering? An opportunity to volunteer with your child, grandchild, etc. expose them to giving back to their community?

We have volunteers who bring a child or grandchild with them when they volunteer (i.e. working at a family event) and it definitely makes the event better when other people and kids see that young people volunteer. We also have high school and university students volunteer with us as well as grandparents and newcomers. We try to accommodate everyone who would like to volunteer. We would love to hear from you!

Why not join us?

It’s Garden Wildlife Week! This week celebrates the natural world found in our gardens.

This week encourages people to appreciate and protect the birds, insects, and plants in their backyards. The celebration highlights the vital role these creatures play in keeping our environment healthy!

Government House has 8.5 acres of gardens and wildlife and insects are often spotted when we are out and about.

Encouraging biodiversity in backyards helps balance ecosystems. It brings pollinators, natural pest controllers, and other beneficial creatures closer to home. We hope you get an opportunity to get out and see if you can spot any “wildlife” in your garden/yard this week.

Are you making plans for the weekend! May we suggest a visit to Government House.

Escape the crowds and enjoy a stroll through the Government House gardens where spring blooms are putting on a show — tulips, prairie smoke, crocuses, bleeding hearts, violets and more are in bloom!

After your garden walk, head inside to explore our new feature exhibit, In The Limelight: The Foundation of Theatre in Regina, uncovering the connections between Government House and Regina’s theatre history.

Then take a guided tour of the museum and step back to 1905 Saskatchewan to discover fascinating stories and household items from another era.

Not a history fan? Visit “A Grandmother’s Love” by Michele Rogers in the QEII Art Gallery.

Flowers, art, history, and something for everyone — see you soon!

It’s International Tea Day! What better excuse is there to slow down, catch up with a friend, and share a comforting cup of tea?☕️🫖

Tea has long been associated with relaxation, stress reduction, and even improved focus, but perhaps the greatest benefit is the simple joy of connecting with others over a warm cuppa.

At Government House, tea is always steeped in tradition! The Government House Historical Society hosts Victorian Teas once a month from April to December, along with Coffee in the Conservatory (tea lovers welcome too!) from January to March.

Want to bring a little Victorian charm home with you? We also sell our very own Victorian Tea Blend at Government House so you can enjoy a taste of history in your own teacup.

Whether you join us for a Victorian Tea or brew a pot at home, today is the perfect day to put the kettle on and celebrate International Tea Day!
