It’s International Museum Week!
Museums connect us to our past, inspire creativity, and bring people together through shared stories, cultures, and experiences. They help us understand where we’ve come from and imagine where we’re going.
Did you know the Government House Historical Society played a key role in preserving Government House and creating the museum we enjoy today?
In 1969, a dedicated group of community members successfully lobbied to save Saskatchewan House. Their efforts led to the building being designated a historic site in 1971, restoration beginning in 1977, and reopened as Government House Museum in 1980. This Instrumental group became the Government House Historical Society 1981.
The Society also helped furnish the museum by tracking down original Government House artifacts that were auctioned off in 1945 and acquiring other pieces from the 1905 era to bring Saskatchewan’s history to life.
This International Museum Week, why not stop by Government House, explore the museum, and take in our feature and art exhibits? History is waiting to be discovered!
