Inspiring work Ms. Slack!
Grade 6 students in Laura Slack’s class at W.F. Ready School combined mathematics, art, and reconciliation through the creation of a meaningful star quilt project.
As part of their numeracy learning, students measured angles and constructed rhombuses to design a traditional star quilt pattern. They selected orange paper to honour Orange Shirt Day and the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, weaving an important message into their mathematical work.
Along the way, students learned about the cultural significance of star quilts and how they are traditionally gifted to honour and celebrate others. To recognize the experiences of residential school survivors, those who never returned home, and their families, the class dedicated their quilt to remembrance and reconciliation. Students also wrote personal reconciliation pledges, which were incorporated into the display.
The learning extended beyond mathematics. Working collaboratively, students created a classroom land acknowledgement that will help guide their learning throughout the year. The project encouraged students to reflect on their relationship with the land, make cross-curricular connections, and deepen their understanding of the ongoing importance of truth and reconciliation.
