Congratulations to Saskatoon youth Camden Scribe for being chosen to receive the presitigious Young Courage Award from the Raoul Wallenberg Academy in Stockholm, Sweden! Well done!

Saskatoon Teenager to Receive Raoul Wallenberg Academy’s Young Courage Award in Stockholm, Sweden!

The Young Courage Award honors young people driving positive change around the world. The 2026 Canadian recipient is 15-year-old Camden Scribe, from Saskatoon. He will travel to Stockholm for the Award Ceremony on August 27, meeting with other changemakers from all over the world, and walking in Raoul Wallenberg’s footsteps.

Camden has shown leadership and moral courage in his community, strengthening Indigenous voices, standing against bullying and improving student safety. He also is a prominent young Indigenous traditional dancer who served as the Head Young Man Dancer at the Manito Ahbee Powwow. As a traditional dancer, he wears his hair in braids, a practice deeply connected to the broader "Boys with Braids" movement.

Raoul Wallenberg is Canada’s first honorary citizen, designated in 1985. A Swedish diplomat, Raoul Wallenberg is recognized for his moral courage. In 1944 he saved thousands of Hungarian Jews from the Holocaust, providing protective passports and shelter. He disappeared in January 1945, at the age of 32, and is presumed to have been executed in Soviet custody.

The Raoul Wallenberg Academy, in collaboration with the Svenska institutet and several Swedish embassies around the world, is proud to announce that this year’s award has reached more countries than ever before. The award recognizes young people aged 13 to 20 who, despite limited resources, have acted in the spirit of Raoul Wallenberg through exceptional courage and outstanding initiative. The award recipients were selected from nominations submitted by private citizens and institutions across 15 countries: Australia, Canada, Greece, Hungary, Monaco, Montenegro, New Zealand, North Macedonia, Norway, Poland, Serbia, Sweden, Tanzania, Uganda, and the United States.

We are very proud of all Young Courage Award winners and wish Camden and his fellow award recipients a lovely time in Stockholm! Congratulations!

On a beautiful Saskatchewan summer day, with blue prairie skies stretching as far as the eye could see, Her Honour Bernadette McIntyre was welcomed to the Poundmaker Cree Nation to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the signing of Treaty Number Six.

During her visit on August 11th, 2026, the Lieutenant Governor enjoyed touring the Poundmaker Museum and Gallery and viewing the many historic and artistic exhibits. Her Honour also paid her respects at the grave of Chief Poundmaker, the First Nation's namesake.

Thanks to the Poundmaker Band Council, Chief Antoine and Milton Tootoosis for the invitation to Her Honour and for organizing the visit and the ceremony in which the Lieutenant Governor was honoured with the gift of a blanket. Poundmaker Cree Nation hosted an entire day of events and activities, including a powwow in the evening.

Chief Poundmaker, also known as Pîhtokahanapiwiyin, was a signatory of Treaty Number Six in 1876 as a Headman for Red Pheasants Band. He broke away from that band soon after and became a Chief of his own band. Chief Poundmaker would earn the title of the "The Peacemaker" as he was instrumental in maintaining peace and good relations. Poundmaker was later accused of crimes and was sentenced to prison in 1885. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau exonerated Chief Poundmaker in 2019 and apologized to the Poundmaker Cree Nation.

On Monday afternoon, July 29th, 2026, Lieutenant Governor Bernadette McIntyre was deligthed to attend the 100th birthday party of Mary O'Brien at The Williston in Regina.

Also on hand to help celebrate were several of Mary's family members, many friends including four-time world men's curling champion Ernie Richardson, and members of the CTV Regina News team who interviewed Mary. She does have an interesting story to tell!

Mary O'Brien was born on July 26th, 1926, in Cambridge, England. During the Second World War, when Mary was 18 years old, local girls were encouraged to attend dances at the community hall with the soldiers and airmen stationed nearby. Mary likes to say that it was to "keep them out of the beer parlor!" At one of those dances she met the love of her life, Robert Charles O'Brien, a Canadian airman.

The couple soon married, and Mary became a War Bride. She boarded a ship to begin her new life in Canada. On March 1st, 1946, Mary arrived in Halifax, where she was greeted by something she had never seen before - two feet of snow! As she continued her journey west by train to Saskatchewan, Mary was amazed by the "huge buildings" she saw across the Prairies. She later discovered they were grain elevators situated along the railway.

Mary and Robert settled in the village of Gilroy, where they raised four children: Dennis, Katherine, Susan and Michael. Mary loved being a farm wife and everything the Prairies had to offer. Although she and Robert travelled the world together, she couldn't imagine calling anywhere but Saskatchewan home.

Today, at 100 years young, she no longer lives on the farm, but she certainly hasn't slowed down! She enjoys attending daily exercise classes, art workshops and parties, and she treasures spending time with friends in her daily coffee group. Mary speaks fondly of her "wonderful life". She proudly says that she "wouldn't change a thing!"

If you know someone who is about to mark a major birthday, help them celebrate with a special signed birthday card from the Lieutenant Governor. You can make a request for a card from Her Honour and from other dignitaries as well (including King Charles!) through the LGO website at https://www.ltgov.sk.ca/message-requests. Congratulations to Lynda Monahan on becoming the 12th Poet Laureate of Saskatchewan and to Aya Skouta for being named the 7th Youth Poet Laureate of Saskatchewan.

Lieutenant Governor Bernadette McIntyre is the Honorary Patron of the Saskatchewan Writers Guild.

We are delighted to announce that Aya Skouta will be the 7th Youth Poet Laureate of Saskatchewan from August 1, 2026 to July 31, 2027 and Lynda Monahan will be the 12th Poet Laureate of Saskatchewan with a term of August 1, 2026 to July 31, 2028.

Youth Poet Laureate Aya Skouta (she/her) is a Canadian-Moroccan poet, writer, and student at the University of Saskatchewan. As a youth voice, Aya uses poetry and spoken word to navigate the complexities of identity, philosophy, and curiosity about the world. She has published and shared her work across Canada and the Prairies, moving audiences at the Canadian Individual Poetry Slam 2026 in Vancouver, and capturing the title of Saskatchewan poetry slam champion in 2025 and 2026 with SKribe. Throughout her growing artistic journey, Aya remains grounded in the belief that curiosity is the heart of poetry, and she is committed to fueling that spark of curiosity within young writers.

Saskatchewan Poet Laureate Lynda Monahan is author of five poetry collections, A Slow Dance in the Flames (Coteau Books, 1998), What My Body Knows (Coteau Books, 2003), Verge (Guernica Editions, 2015), a cowritten collection, A Beautiful Stone: poems and ululations (Radiant Press 2019), The Door at the End of Everything (Shadowpaw Press, 2024) and a chapbook titled The Book of Bill.

HUGE thank you to our previous Poet Laureate, Peace Akintade-Oluwagbeye, and Youth Poet Laureate, Tai Reign. We appreciate all you've both done for poetry in Saskatchewan!
