Hayden works in office reception at Clare Parker Homes, where he helps with things like transferring calls, caring for office plants, copying documents and ordering supplies such as water and paper products.

His work has given him opportunities to take on different responsibilities and learn new things along the way. Hayden says some tasks can still be challenging, especially remembering names and transferring calls, but he also knows there are people around to help when he needs it.

“Doing things for myself and with others, I enjoy this the most.”

Hayden says he’s happy with how things are going and looks forward to continuing to learn and take on new challenges.

Today we’re recognizing Disability Employment Awareness Month by featuring Rayanne and the work she does at Clare Parker Homes. 💛

Rayanne takes on a variety of responsibilities in the office, from helping in the kitchen and handling outgoing mail to watering plants, restocking coffee and creamer, reading emails and taking phone messages.

She says the kitchen is one of her favourite parts of the job, and she’s also been learning new tasks along the way, like replacing soap dispensers and transferring documents from the computer to the printer.

For Rayanne, work is also about independence.

“I like that I can support myself more.”

Earning her own money gives her more freedom to make choices for herself and buy the things she wants, something she is proud of.

The ICAN Workshop is a peer support workshop for adults with intellectual disabilities and neurodivergence. It is a time for self-advocates to come together for a day of learning advocacy skills, sharing their experiences, and making friends.

A few moments from our Gentle Teaching 2 training last Friday. 💙

One of the conversations throughout the day was about remembering that the people we support are whole people, with their own thoughts, emotions, preferences, boundaries and ways of communicating.

Support is not just about responding to behaviour. It is about looking deeper, understanding what someone may be trying to express, and continuing to build relationships rooted in trust, respect and safety.

Gentle Teaching gives us the opportunity to reflect on how we show up in those moments and how we can support people in a way that recognizes their individuality, dignity and humanity.

We’re grateful for another day of learning, conversation and growth together.

As the most recent addition to the Clare Parker house, Lana has brought her own warmth and personality to the CPH family. 💙

She’s active, curious, and always up for getting out and doing something, whether that’s swimming, stopping for a drink, or heading to the drop-in for crafts and activities.

Lana communicates in ways that are uniquely her own, through gestures, sounds, and the little cues that those around her come to understand more and more as they get to know her.

What stands out most is her loving and kind personality. As you spend more time with Lana, you begin to recognize the ways she expresses herself, what she enjoys, and the things that make her happiest.

This Heart of CPH story is a reminder that connection can look different for everyone, and that taking the time to truly get to know someone can mean so much.

Thank you, Lana, for bringing your warmth, kindness, and unique personality to the CPH family. 💙

The NTG Canadian Consortium is offering its Dementia Capable Support of Adults with Intellectual Disabilities & Dementia training, designed for professionals who support older adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities across disability services, health care, long-term care, and aging-related settings.

There’s never a dull moment with Ruth around. 💙

Whether she’s heading out for a walk, working on a puzzle, caring for her baby dolls, or pulling someone in for an impromptu dance, Ruth brings energy and personality wherever she goes.

She loves being involved, helping out around the house, and finding ways to connect with the people around her. Sometimes that means showing you something she loves, sharing a joke, or simply grabbing your hand and bringing you along for the moment.
