Voting in your first municipal election?

Here are 3 things you should know: where, when and how to vote!

📍 WHERE?
Most people vote in the municipality where they live, but there are special rules for students. If you are a student and consider your “home” to be the place where you live when you are not attending school (that is, you plan on returning there), then you are eligible to vote in both your “home” municipality and in the municipality where you live while attending school.

📆 WHEN?
October 26, 2026, is Election Day, though some municipalities may allow mail-in or advance voting.

🤔 HOW?
First thing’s first: make sure you’re registered to vote! Until August 12, you can visit https://www.registertovoteon.ca/?utm_source=facebook&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=dhfacebook&utm_content=app.dashsocial.com%2Fministry-of-municipal-affairs-and-housing-mmah-en%2Flibrary%2Fmedia%2F679626781 to add, check, or update your voter registration information.

To find your voting place, learn about voting accommodations, see who your candidates are and other municipality-specific issues, contact your municipality.

🫗 Throw away perishable and cooked foods that have not been refrigerated properly due to power outages
🥦 Plan when to eat different types of food – for example, eat perishable food first

Fire doesn’t care about excuses.

➡️ Living in a rental? Test your alarms monthly and notify your landlord if they aren’t working.
➡️ Burnt dinner a few months ago and heard the alarm sound? That’s not enough. Press the ‘test’ button every month to make sure they’re working.
➡️ Already have an alarm on the main floor of your home? You need a working smoke alarm on every storey and outside all sleeping areas.

No excuses, because only working smoke alarms can save lives.

Having working smoke alarms where required isn’t just smart - it’s the law.
