Thank you to the Young Agrarians and Kristina Metzlaff of Bird Tree Urban Farm for this morning's potluck breakfast and educational urban farm tour.

It is so encouraging to see a new generation of conscientious individuals pursuing wholesome values—including sustainable, locally grown food (and flowers!) and stronger connections to the land.

I was particularly interested to learn more about the Young Agrarians Land Matching Program, which helps connect farmers looking for land with landowners interested in putting their property to productive agricultural use.

A great example of growing community connections.

Reflections: Jade Lakes Aug. 24, 2026

A wonderful full day hiking 22 km to Jade Lakes in Mount Revelstoke National Park — the day after a downpour cleared the wildfire smoke and opened up the views.

♥ Gratitude for the Present
♥ Growth for the Future

We are incredibly fortunate to live in this amazing place. This day is a good reminder to appreciate what we have—and our responsibility to protect what makes it so special.

Alan Dennis — Getting Things Done

It was such a delight to run into my friend Alan Dennis this morning.

Alan, author of Snow Nomad: An Avalanche Memoir (FriesenPress, 2022), spent 30 years pioneering avalanche research around the world.

This morning we talked about recent caribou sightings; lowering the voting age to 16 — Alan's view is that “voting is less dangerous than driving”; green burials, a Council commitment that seems to have stalled; and, finally, getting things done.

It was that last topic that Alan encouraged me to focus on:

“Have a plan in place to get things done.”

Simple advice, but important.

Good ideas and good intentions matter. But effective local government also requires clear priorities, a practical plan, and the discipline to follow through.

Secret of visionary leadership:

Nico Leenders has followed an unusually diverse path—from YMCA day camp director to BMW sales associate, from senior copywriter to managing rare automobile auctions with RM Sotheby’s, and from hospitality to business development. His education is equally diverse, including a BFA in Sculpture, a diploma in Motive Power and a Master of Business Administration.

Yet there is a common thread: Nico understands the importance of knowing where you want to go.

For Nico, vision isn't simply about having big ideas. True vision establishes a clear destination, creates measurable milestones and checks in regularly to ensure we are on track.

That is Nico’s approach whether coaching volleyball (his sport of choice) or serving as President of Tourism Revelstoke. Tourism Revelstoke has a five-year business plan that establishes the longer-term vision and annual tactical plans that translate that vision into specific actions. This disciplined approach has contributed to Tourism Revelstoke's continued success.

Our conversation naturally turned to leadership in our community and at City Council. We share a belief that strong leadership requires more than reacting to the issues immediately in front of us. It requires a clear vision for where the community is going, measurable objectives along the way, and accountability for achieving them.

That is what I appreciate most about Nico's perspective: vision is only meaningful when you have a plan to achieve it.

Who is the Lucky Duck?

There may be no better traditional place for an invigorating community conversation than the barber chair. In Revelstoke, we are fortunate to have so many hairstylists and barbers who combine great service with the conversations and personal connections that make small businesses such an important part of community life.

For the past couple of years, my barber has been Wade Rimstad — the Lucky Duck Barber.

My conversations with Wade are always positive. He is someone who naturally sees the bright side of life and, to me, reflects so much of the Revelstoke spirit: positive, grateful, and inclusive.

I first met Wade thanks to Barber Deb, who also helped create an opportunity for Wade to recover and rebuild after being displaced by the Jasper wildfire. Thank you, Deb, for this and for the many other good things you do in our community.

Wade thinks he is the Lucky Duck for landing in Revelstoke.
I think I’m the lucky duck to live in a community filled with encouraging people, small businesses, and individuals like Wade and Deb who help make those businesses — and our community — thrive.

Thank you, Wade, for the haircuts, the conversations, and the reminder to be grateful.

Tony, the "fiscal watchdog," served two terms as a city councillor during my years as Chief Administrative Officer. He brought a strong business perspective to the council table and was unwavering in his commitment to public accountability and responsible financial management.

Tony's tenacious approach to the stewardship of taxpayers' dollars earned the community's respect, culminating in him receiving the highest number of votes in his successful bid for a second term.

Eric followed a similar path of business leadership. With a strong work ethic developed while working in his father's restaurant as a young man, he went on to own and operate the Swiss Chalet Motel for more than 30 years. Through his commitment to exceptional customer service, the motel has earned a reputation for outstanding value and a loyal base of returning guests.

Like his father, Eric has also devoted significant time to community service. Serving as a volunteer board member of Tourism Revelstoke since its inception in 2008, Eric has guided the effective investment of tourism revenues, strengthening one of Revelstoke's most important economic sectors for the benefit of the entire community.

Revelstoke thrives because of people like Tony and Eric Scarcella—individuals who combine business experience with a genuine commitment to public service.

Thank you, Tony, for setting such a strong example. And thank you, Eric, for continuing that tradition of community leadership.

He didn't know it until today: Mayor Jack Van Rijn has been one of my mentors for several years.

I first became aware of Jack after my daughter and her family moved to Coaldale, Alberta. As I began following the community on social media, I noticed something unusual. Jack was continually celebrating the achievements of others—city councillors, community leaders, city staff, local businesses, volunteers, and even schoolchildren.

Over time, I realized this wasn't simply his communication style; it was his leadership style.

Jack enthusiastically promotes new businesses, welcomes residents to every municipal improvement, and celebrates community events. He has a deep love for Coaldale, reflected in his popular weekly "Throwback Thursday" posts, where he shares stories and photographs from the community's history. He is also a steadfast supporter of the Birds of Prey Foundation, Alberta's first privately licensed raptor rescue and conservation organization.

When I arrived at Coaldale City Hall this morning, staff simply smiled and said, "Go straight to Jack's office. If the door is open, just walk in."

That told me something before we had even met.

Although I felt I already knew Jack through years of following his work, I was struck by how soft-spoken and humble he was. I had expected a much more forceful personality. Instead, our conversation quickly turned to the accomplishments of other people. He spoke with genuine enthusiasm about city staff, council colleagues, volunteers, businesses, and community organizations. Only after asking several questions did it become apparent how often Jack himself had been the driving force behind many of those successes.

As our conversation came to an end, Jack simply said, "We do this to help make the community better."

Those words stayed with me.

Jack Van Rijn isn't simply building a stronger Coaldale. By encouraging and celebrating the people around him, he is helping others become better leaders as well. I know he has done that for me.

As a developer, Andrew Young is working to create housing that is both more attainable and respectful of Revelstoke's unique character. Rather than seeing housing and quality of life as competing priorities, he believes thoughtful design can achieve both.

Andrew shared an idea that resonated with me:
"I hope to create homes that enhance the living experience while incorporating outdoor spaces. People choose to live in Revelstoke for the natural environment. That's why we're here."

I recently had the opportunity to meet with Andrew, and I was impressed that he and his partners describe their vision as "Community-Focused Development." That simple phrase speaks to an approach that considers not only the homes being built, but the sense of neighbourhood belonging.

As Revelstoke continues to grow, conversations like this are important. We need more housing, but we also need development that respects the values and reinforces the character that make Revelstoke special.

Mike Brown – Pursuing Business Excellence

I first met Mike almost 15 years ago in true Revelstoke fashion: two complete strangers sharing a ride to the Kelowna airport.

Mike arrived in Revelstoke in 2009 after completing university in Montreal. Despite the economic recession at the time, he saw opportunity where others saw uncertainty. After a short stint in the restaurant industry, Mike became involved in a number of community initiatives, including the Youth Action Plan, the Poverty Reduction Strategy, and several projects with Okanagan College.
Then came an unexpected change in direction.

Rather than pursuing a more conventional career path, Mike and a friend decided to start a food truck business. Many longtime residents will remember the early days of the brightly coloured Taco Club truck, serving outstanding food at a fair price with a genuine Revelstoke vibe. Although Mike had never imagined himself in the food industry, he embraced the challenge and helped create a business that quickly became part of the community's character.

Mike has an easy-going, approachable personality, but beneath that relaxed demeanour is an exceptionally thoughtful entrepreneur. Today, he has built a business that attracts great employees and operates successfully with less of his day-to-day involvement, allowing him to focus much of his professional energy on real estate.

During our conversation, Mike shared his vision for strengthening Revelstoke's downtown through thoughtful redevelopment that respects our rich heritage while creating opportunities for new and existing businesses to grow and thrive. It was a reminder that successful communities don't simply preserve the past or chase the future—they thoughtfully balance both.

I look forward to continuing these conversations with Mike and learning from his business experience as we work toward a stronger and more vibrant Revelstoke.
