Emergency lighting only has one job, and it only has to do that job on the worst day possible. That's what makes it easy to overlook. It sis quietly in the background until the moment everything else fails, and that's exactly when you find out whether it was maintained properly.

To ensure your building remains compliant with the BC Fire Code and ready for any power loss, your team should execute a quick 30-second test every month:

👉 Locate the Push-to-Test Button: Every emergency light fixture and illuminated exit sign combo features a small red or black test button on the casing.

👉 Press and Hold for 30 Seconds: Pressing the button simulates a localized power failure by cutting grid power to the fixture and forcing it to switch to internal battery power.

👉Ensure both lamps illuminate instantly and remain bright for the entire 30 seconds. Check that the light heads are still aligned to illuminate key paths, stairwells, and exits.

👉 Log the Inspection: Record the date, unit location, and pass/fail result in your building’s Fire Safety Logbook. If a light dims quickly, flickers, or fails to turn on, the battery or bulb needs immediate replacement.
