✨National AccessAbility Week: Sensory Experiences✨

Meaningful support includes meaningful sensory experiences. Sensory activities, like exploring textures, sounds, movement, and nature, help people understand the world, express themselves, and feel more connected to their surroundings.

Sensory experiences can support learning, build confidence, and help with emotional regulation, creating moments of calm, joy, and discovery.

When we create spaces that respect and respond to individual sensory needs, we help people feel safe, included, and able to fully participate, because everyone deserves to experience the world in a way that works for them.

🌟 National AccessAbility Week: Friendship 🌟

Meaningful support also means supporting meaningful friendships. Friendships provide more than companionship; they bring joy, emotional support, and a true sense of belonging. Strong social connections can reduce isolation, build confidence, and open the door to fuller participation in community life.

At the heart of inclusion is connection. When people have opportunities to build real friendships, they feel valued, supported, and part of something bigger, because everyone deserves to belong.

🙌 National AccessAbility Week: Communication 🙌

Meaningful support starts with meaningful communication. Every person has a unique way of expressing themselves, and when we slow down, listen, and adapt, we make space for choice, connection, and belonging.

Communication is at the heart of person-centred support. When we understand and respond to each person’s communication style, we empower them to build relationships, make decisions, and fully participate in their community.

Communication isn’t just a skill, it’s a right.

✨National AccessAbility Week: Person-Centred Approaches ✨

Person-Centred Care is defined by the Canadian Alzheimer Society as: a philosophy that recognizes that individuals have unique values, personal history and personality and that each person has an equal right to dignity, respect, and to participate fully in their environment.

The ultimate goal of person-centred care is to create partnerships among individuals with developmental disabilities, staff, and their families, to enhance the quality of life and the quality of life of the people we support. Services and supports are designed and delivered in a way that is integrated, collaborative, and mutually respectful of all persons involved. At Aspire, person-centred practice is at the heart of the work we do every day.

Everything we do is respectful of the rights of the individuals and families we serve. We support families to make their own decisions and choices, even when that means taking risks, changing minds, or making mistakes. Aspire staff and caregivers walk beside the people we support. We are partners, helpers, and guides; ready to support in the ways that work best for each individual and family.

🌟 National AccessAbility Week: Rights 🌟

Rights are universal to all people. They protect us and our freedoms. But how does Canada protect our rights?

The Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) was adopted by the United Nations in 2006, and ratified by Canada in 2010. This means that, under international law, Canada has officially committed to upholding the rights of people with disabilities according to the Convention. The CRPD is based on foundational principles like dignity and equality, and emphasises the right for people with disabilities to make decisions about their own lives.

As part of its commitment to the CRPD, in 2019 the Canadian government introduced the Accessible Canada Act, a legally-binding document that aims to create a barrier-free Canada by 2040. This involves identifying and removing barriers to access across areas such as employment, infrastructure, and transportation within Canada.

The Accessible Canada Act reaffirms Canada’s commitment to inclusivity and accessibility, ensuring that people with disabilities have the right to participate fully and equally in all aspects of society.

Today marks the start of this year's National AccessAbility Week (NAAW)! 🙌

At Aspire, we support individuals with developmental disabilities to live fulfilling lives and achieve their dreams. We strive to eliminate barriers in access to housing, employment, education and community inclusion, so that individuals can live thriving, connected, and happy lives.

This year’s NAAW theme is "Building a Strong, Accessible Canada”, showing that strength and accessibility go hand-in-hand, and that equal opportunity uplifts us all.

Throughout the week, we will be sharing posts on relevant accessibility topics and how to make spaces more inclusive for individuals living with disabilities. We hope that you learn something new!

May is a month to celebrate the incredible work of educators and child care providers, as well as to recognise the importance of child care in supporting children and their families.

Child care is an essential service, enabling children to live happy and healthy lives, but also bringing other social and economic benefits to individuals and their communities.

At Aspire, we have multiple programs serving children from 6 months to 12 years old at both Seedlings Child Care Centre and Treehouse Early Learning Centre. We are so grateful to our teams across these programs for all of their care and dedication 🙌🌟
