3 SISTERS GARDEN REVEAL! 4 months ago, we planted glass gem corn kernels and delicata squash seeds in our office. Now, the garden is in full bloom 😋

This 3 Sisters Garden at Alexandra is an Urban Bounty Demonstration Plot. It's managed by staff and volunteers to display sustainable gardening techniques! The 3 Sisters are a smart choice for community gardens since they don't require much maintenance - the sisters take care of each other 🌽🫛🍠

Welcome to our 3 Sisters Demonstration Garden at Alexandra Community Garden! The 3 sisters (corn, beans, and squash) are an ancient gardening technique in Indigenous communities across the Americas. Each plant supports the others to create a low-maintenance, sustainable garden plot.

🌽Corn: Grows tall to support beans, and forms a natural, protective barrier to wind and erosion.
🫛Beans: Restore nutrients to the soil and provide protein to people!
🍠Squash (& potatoes): Spread out to cover the ground, suppressing weeds and soil retaining moisture.

Volunteers make everything that Urban Bounty does possible! At the Volunteer Appreciation event on Saturday at Terra Nova, we came together to celebrate the impact we make in the community.

From picking fruit to watering demonstration gardens, volunteers learned about everything that other volunteers do in the background to make plants and people in Richmond flourish. We also held a raffle - swipe to see new volunteer Tracy's prize bouquet! 🌻

Today's : Living clover pathway!

This superstar gardener at Cook Community Garden planted clover in between her vegetable beds to create a lush, pollinator-friendly carpet. Unlike grass or gravel, clover regenerates the soil with nitrogen, supercharging the whole garden for future bounty.

July is Disability Pride Month! Richmond Centre for Disability (RCD)'s garden program partners with Urban Bounty to use accessible spaces at several community garden sites. Gardening can be a powerful way for people with disabilities to build agency over their food, connect to nature, and create community in the garden.

RCD Community Outreach Coordinator Dave Thompson is often at Garden City Lands and Alexandra Community Garden with his dog (swipe for pics), who rides in style in a bike carriage. They’re usually preceded by the sound of folk music playing on Dave’s portable speaker. If you see them or hear them in the garden, feel free to say hi! 🐾

Welcome to the Urban Bounty Elders' Garden, where we never stop growing.

Thanks to funding from the Government of Canada's New Horizons for Seniors Program, we are running year-round garden learning sessions with seniors from local community centres! Cohorts of seniors gather weekly on Fridays to sample produce, attend hands-on gardening lessons, and spend quality time outdoors.

🌻 Urban Bounty is excited to welcome another summer team member: Aneesah Azad, Community Gardens Program Intern. She will be in the community gardens, supporting with keeping the gardens looking beautiful and engaging with gardeners!

Aneesah is currently completing her undergrad in Food, Nutrition, and Health at the University of British Columbia. She has spent the last few years bouncing between wellness studios, community initiatives, and now here! Her interests lie at the intersection of community nutrition, food security, and sustainable food systems, and she brings experience in health coaching and client wellness support from previous roles. She also volunteers at Burnaby Hospital, gaining exposure to patient-centred care in a clinical setting.

Vancouver Food Runners volunteers transported the fruit to partners organizations in need to feed the community!
