June in the garden is an exciting, fast-moving time! What's on your June garden plan?

🍅June Transplants: Move summer starts, like tomatoes, peppers, and eggplants, outside as the soil warms up.
🌱Direct Sow: Beans, squash, cucumbers, greens, peas, brussels sprouts, cabbage, carrots, and summer flowers
💧Water! It’s been a dry, hot spring. Without daily watering, seeds won’t sprout. Water thoroughly, and consider putting down straw or bark mulch to keep soil moist.

Urban Bounty Community Gardens are all located in public parks and school yards on City land. Gardening in a public space comes with different joys and challenges than gardening in a private yard. Community gardeners gain an opportunity to make new friends, and share gardening knowledge, seeds, and support.

However, public community gardens also come with the risk that you may not get to harvest all of what you plant.

We can plan for our gardens to be more resilient to crop loss through using strategic, creative planting techniques. Swipe for our favourite strategies for gardening in and with the public!

Happy Invasive Species Action Month! While many invasives are beautiful (and delicious), they are also the scourge of our gardens and ecological restoration projects. How are you taking action to curb invasives and restore native plants in May?

Swipe for photos from our restoration events at Hamilton Community Park last month, including one of the largest Himalayan Blackberry root balls we've ever excavated!

May 22 is International Day for Biodiversity! Some ways that we are observing:
🌸Planting native wildflowers to support pollinators, especially endangered native bees
🌲Removing invasives and restoring native plants at Hamilton Community Garden, Cook Community Garden, and more sites
🌱Saving heirloom seeds to steward agrobiodiversty and crop resilience
💭Envisioning an economy that gives back to the environment instead of extracting from it; bringing ecological health into reality through organizing in our communities and advocating to our leaders
