If you know someone enrolled in UBC's Faculty of Dentistry, be sure to tell them about the 2026 Dr. Bud Sipko Family Fund Scholarship, awarded by the Richmond Community Foundation.

This year, three scholarships are available:

• Two dental student scholarships, each valued at $2,500

• One $2,500 scholarship for a dental hygiene student

To apply, students are asked to prepare a letter detailing their interest in dentistry and their connection to Richmond, whether past or present. This can include residency, employment, community involvement, or education. Three reference letters are also required. Applications will remain open until September 1, 2026.

In 2019, the Vancouver Sunshine Lions Club溫哥華陽光獅子會 established a scholarship fund with the Richmond Community Foundation, to support local students as they pursue a post-secondary education.

Ever since, the Club and its members have actively - and enthusiastically - contributed to the Foundation's growth by hosting major fundraising events and making regular donations.

The Club's most recent act of generosity came at the end of March, when they presented the Foundation with a cheque for $5,000. Gratefully accepted by our Chair, Sunny Chiu, the donation will support the Foundation's work building a stronger, healthier, more vibrant community.

We'd like to thank Wendy Yuan, the Club's Charter President and a former Foundation Board member, for her continued support and for assembling such a passionate group of community leaders, whose giving spirit makes Richmond shine so much brighter!

This past year, the Richmond Community Foundation awarded a $10,000 grant to the Richmond Museum, which allowed the organization to outfit its Community-Led Exhibit space with two new display cases, an interpretive panel hanging system, and a television for showing exhibit-related videos.

The Community-Led Exhibits initiative provides unique opportunities for community groups to share their cultures, traditions, histories, passions, treasures, and stories with other Richmond residents by developing temporary exhibits, with support from the Richmond Museum.

In 2025, the Community-Led Exhibit space hosted its inaugural exhibition, called "From Then to Now: How Japanese Canadians Contributed to Richmond Over 100 Years."

The current exhibition, on display until May 11, is "80 Years of Freedom and Friendship," which explores the Dutch Hunger Winter of 1944/45 and the Canadian liberation of the country at the end of World War II.

Future exhibits from other community groups will make use of the infrastructure created by the Foundation's grant, ensuring ongoing opportunities to share diverse stories and strengthen community engagement and understanding.

Located at the Richmond Museum Extension, inside the Richmond Cultural Centre, the Community-Led Exhibit space is open Monday to Friday, 9:00am - 9:00pm, and Saturday and Sunday from 10:00am - 5:00pm.

For Richmond Cares, Richmond Gives (RCRG) and the Richmond Community Foundation (RCF), it’s the end of an era. After a decade, the two local non-profit organizations have decided to conclude their collaborative partnership.

In 2015, RCRG and RCF entered into an agreement that would see them share staff, resources, and office space, with each organization maintaining its charitable status and a separate Board of Directors.

It was and remains a unique operating model, allowing the organizations to explore synergies between their areas of expertise: volunteer development and service delivery for RCRG, and fund development and community building for RCF.

“It was a bold and innovative experiment,” says Jocelyn Wong, who serves as Executive Director for both organizations. “In the non-profit sector, financial sustainability continues to be a significant challenge, and this collaboration demonstrated how working closely together can strengthen community organizations.”

Over the past 10 years, RCRG has grown its programs and services, while RCF has increased the number and size of its endowment funds, resulting in the distribution of more grants and scholarships.

Working together, the two organizations have strengthened their financial sustainability and expanded their community impact. With both RCRG and RCF in a strong and stable position, the Boards have mutually agreed that this is the right time to conclude the partnership.

“On behalf of RCF, we thank RCRG for their support and services over the past decade,” says RCF Chair Sunny Chiu. “During that period, both organizations have achieved significant growth. We are grateful for the collaboration and look forward to expanding the Foundation’s impact in its next chapter.”

The collaboration will officially end on June 30.

“The Foundation’s Board has been proactively preparing for this transition and is implementing a structured plan to ensure continuity, accountability, and strong stewardship of all funds,” says Chiu.

In the coming months, RCRG will work with the Foundation to facilitate a smooth transition. Importantly, there won’t be any service interruptions, with the Foundation’s current grant and scholarship cycles continuing as normal.

“In collaborating with the Foundation, we’ve seen firsthand the vital role it plays in the Richmond community,” says Wong. “While our partnership is coming to a close, we’ll always have a deep appreciation for the Foundation and its impact. We’ve been on an incredible journey together.”

This past year, the Community Foundation awarded a $10,000 grant to the Richmond Presbyterian Church, in support of its Community Meal Program. In 2025, the church served 12,500 complimentary meals to unhoused residents, low-income seniors, and families struggling with the rising cost of living.

The funding allowed the church to give its hard-working cook a modest but much-deserved raise, as the fast-growing program now requires more of her time. The good news is that, thanks to the grant, meal preparation has become far more efficient! With the remaining funding, the church purchased a variety of commercial-grade kitchen equipment, from a meat slicer to an immersion blender to a new set of pots. These items are a big help to the cook as well as the program's 25+ weekly volunteers, some of whom are in their eighties.

Because of the grant, the program is able to serve more guests without compromising the quality of its meals. It's a reminder that, when it comes to supporting our neighbours in need, good food goes a long way.

Art is at the heart of a vibrant, culturally dynamic community, so it's important that we create spaces to celebrate and enjoy it. Even a small corner devoted to art can become a source of inspiration, fascination, and wonder.

Which brings us to one of the Community Foundation's latest grants. This past year, we awarded $5,775 to the Richmond Arts Coalition, so they could build a permanent exhibition space to highlight local artists.

Located in the Richmond Cultural Centre Annex, the Cornerspace exhibition area features purpose-built, wall-mounted lockable cabinets; mobile plinths with transparent casings; and a digital frame for artist showcase videos (complete with captions to enhance accessibility).

New exhibitions are held quarterly, each with a different theme. Recently, local child and youth artists were featured, while the current exhibition - running until March 13 - focuses on artwork from Richmond seniors.

It may just be a corner space, but it's already capturing the impressive breadth of our community's creativity.

Cassidy Chen is a 23-year-old fashion photographer who, while based in Richmond, has achieved international recognition.

Recently, she was included in Forbes Magazine's 30 Under 30 List, in the Art & Style category. She's appeared on CBC Radio and Global News, and has worked with brands and publications ranging from lululemon to Léonard Paris to ELLE Magazine Japan.

And to think, just a few short years ago - 2020, to be exact - she was the recipient of a Richmond Sunset Rotary Art Scholarship, awarded by the Richmond Community Foundation.

After graduating from McMath Secondary, Cassidy moved on to UBC, where, this past May, she completed a Bachelor of Arts in Film, Cinema & Video Studies. While at school, her photography career was already taking off, with Cassidy traveling to shoot Fashion Weeks in Milan, London, and Paris.

She describes her photography as "immersive, vibrant, and emotive," and aimed at "constantly breaking the barriers to what is possible in creative storytelling." Even to untrained eyes like ours, her work is stunning, and it's easy to see why the fashion world holds Cassidy in such high esteem.

She's a singular talent and - we can say with immense pride - a homegrown success story.

This past year, the Richmond Community Foundation awarded a $10,000 grant to Aspire Richmond, a local non-profit organization that provides programs and services for infants, children, and adults with developmental disabilities, helping them to lead thriving, connected, happy lives.

With the funding, Aspire purchased five new Automatic External Defibrillators (AEDs) - lifesaving devices used to treat sudden cardiac arrest - and installed them at its various program locations. While most Aspire staff are already trained in First Aid, including the use of AEDs, they'll receive specific training on operating the new model, so they can act quickly and confidently in emergency situations.

Aspire recently contacted the Foundation to describe the grant's impact:

"By placing AEDs directly within our programs, we strengthened the overall safety and wellbeing of the people we serve, many of whom face elevated health risks. This investment also enhanced our training efforts, empowering staff with the knowledge and tools needed to act decisively and provide a higher standard of care."

While the AEDs were a one-time purchase, their long-term value is immeasurable, contributing both to emergency preparedness and peace of mind.

As another year draws to a close, all of us at the Richmond Community Foundation would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to our fundholders, donors, and partners, as well as our 2025 scholarship and grant recipients.

As a Foundation, our role is to be a catalyst for new opportunities and positive change. That might mean helping a student pursue their educational goals, or supporting a non-profit organization in launching an innovative and impactful community project. It's a role that continually inspires us, and reveals the talent, compassion, determination, and collaborative spirit that can be found throughout the Richmond community.

We're grateful that, every day for 35 years, we've gotten to help our community grow and its people thrive. What a privilege it's been, and we know an even brighter future awaits.

With that, we'd like to wish everyone a safe, healthy, and very happy holiday season!

And of course, if you're doing some last-minute Christmas shopping, don't forget a gift for your community: https://www.rcrg.org/Foundation/donate

On December 7, at a celebration marking its 10th anniversary, the Vancouver Sunshine Lions Club溫哥華陽光獅子會 raised an incredible $20,288 for the Richmond Community Foundation.

At the event, Foundation Chair Sunny Chiu appeared in a cheque presentation photo with Club President Ethan Kang, Charter President Wendy Yuan, and Event Co-Chair Jeff Guo. Also in attendance was Foundation Board member Emmett Mark.

"On behalf of the Richmond Community Foundation, a wholehearted congratulations to the Vancouver Sunshine Lions Club on its 10th anniversary," says Chiu. "As a fundholder, the club has continued to lead by example and make a strong impact in Richmond. We truly appreciate all its contributions to our community!"

In 2019, the club established an endowment fund with the Community Foundation, from which it awards scholarships to local students. The effort was led by Wendy Yuan, who, at the time, was a Foundation Board member. During her tenure, she was responsible for numerous fundraising initiatives and encouraged others in her network to create their own endowment funds.

After completing her third term, totalling seven years of dedicated service with the Foundation, Wendy remains a major supporter, as evidenced by her work with the Vancouver Sunshine Lions Club.
