Today, June 4th, marks the anniversary of the tragic Line of Duty Death of Paramedic Tony Sunderland. He was only 41 when he collapsed and died of a heart attack while attending to two critical patients from a motor vehicle accident near Endako, BC in 1988. Tony was the first Ambulance Paramedics of BC paramedic to die while on duty. He was married and had two sons.

Please take a moment today to remember Tony, and the nine other Paramedics who have died in the Line of Duty in BC.

On May 17, 2006, the communities of Kimberley and Cranbrook experienced an immeasurable loss. For the people of these close-knit communities, it was a day marked by sorrow and shock. For those of us in the paramedic profession, it was also the loss of colleagues and friends we considered family. Many of us can still recall the exact moment we learned the news, a moment that profoundly affected both our lives and the wider community.
Each year on this date, we pause to remember the lives of paramedics Kim Weitzel and Shawn Currier, as well as mine workers Doug Erickson and Bob Newcombe. This tragedy left a lasting impact on everyone connected to Kimberley and Cranbrook, reinforcing the deep bonds that unite their communities.
This year marks the 20th anniversary of that day. To honour their sacrifice and reaffirm our commitment to never forget them, Kimberley Ambulance hosted a commemorative event in the Kimberley platzl gazebo on Wednesday, May 20, 2026. Our APBC ceremonial unit members were there to remember and to honour Kim and Shawn.

Today, May 17th is the 20th anniversary of the tragic loss of Paramedics Kim Weitzel and Shawn Currier, known as the Sullivan Mine Tragedy. Kim, 44, and Shawn, 21, both from the Kimberley Station, were responding to a call inside a water-testing shed at the decommissioned Sullivan Mine. Both Kim and Shawn, along with two mine employees, were overcome by a low oxygen atmosphere. All four tragically lost their lives.

Please take a moment today to remember Kim, Shawn and the eight other Paramedics who have given the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty.

May 6th marks BC Fallen Paramedics Memorial Day. Our Ceremonial Unit members will be in Victoria at the Fallen Paramedics Memorial on the back lawn at the Legislature Building, in the Emergency Services Garden of Honour. A place that stands in quiet reflection and deep respect for the ten paramedics in British Columbia who lost their lives in the line of duty.

Each name represents a life dedicated to helping others, often in moments of crisis, uncertainty, and need. Their commitment to service did not end with their shift. It became their legacy.

Today, we pause to remember them, to honour their sacrifice, and to stand with their families, friends, and colleagues who carry that loss every day.

Always Remembered.
