🎹✹ Bringing colour, nature, and life to the Cannery Classroom

We’re thrilled to showcase the original artwork created by two incredible artists for the Cannery’s Education Table Improvement Project. Their designs came to life during live painting outside Gulf of Georgia Cannery earlier this summer.

🌿 Julia Vasileva is a Vancouver-based children’s book illustrator and artist whose work often draws inspiration from nature and the world around her.

🐟 Sandra Fossella, an interdisciplinary artist and member of Musqueam First Nation, created a unique design inspired by Musqueam’s long fishing history and deep connection to salmon.

We’re privileged to share their beautiful work as we brighten the space and make it more welcoming for school programs. 💙🎹

The Gulf of Georgia Cannery National Historic Site is offering FREE ADMISSION until September 7, 2026. No pass needed. Please note that additional fees apply for guided tours, rentals and parking at the Gulf of Georgia Cannery.

Immerse yourself in “Cannery REcollections: Redefining Storytelling through Objects”. This exhibition explores how everyday objects serve as touchstones connecting us to people, places, and moments in time, revealing the many ways we experience and interpret history.

As we’ve shared throughout this series, Bud Sakamoto’s paintings are more than works of art. They preserve the traditions, knowledge, and experiences of a lifetime spent fishing on the Fraser River.

As you’ve been following along but haven’t visited yet, there’s still time to experience “Reading the River: The Art of Catching Salmon on the Fraser River.” This display will be on view through Fall 2026 at the Gulf of Georgia Cannery National Historic Site. With the Canada Strong Pass, admission to the Cannery is FREE until September 7, 2026.

At first, these paintings seem to tell the story of changing fishing boats. But after spending time with them, I think they’re really about something else.

“Beginning of the Powered Fishing Boats and Fishing the Fraser River, 1920s to 1940s” shows a period when engines, equipment, and technology transformed commercial fishing. Boats became faster and more efficient, opening new opportunities on the water.

Yet the paintings quietly remind us that no amount of technology could replace experience, even in today’s age. Fishers still had to understand the tides, anticipate the salmon’s movements, and read a river that was always constantly changing.

To me, that’s what makes Bud Sakamoto’s work so compelling. It’s not just documenting the history of fishing. It’s preserving a certain way of thinking, a way of learning from the river and its tides, and a way of life that helped shape Steveston’s identity.
