Burnout doesn’t usually show up early in your career.

It shows up when the excitement fades, the responsibilities stack up, and the job starts competing with your life at home.

When family pressure meets stalled professional growth, it creates a quiet but dangerous imbalance. Left unchecked, it leads to disengagement, resentment, and poor performance on the fireground.

Burnout is not a weakness. It’s a warning sign, no different than changing conditions during a fire. Ignore it long enough and it will make decisions for you.

Recognize it early. Rest intentionally. Train with purpose. Most importantly, talk about it, because silent firefighters don’t stay safe effective firefighters.

Empowering our firefighters means more than applause after a positive call outcome, or a quick “thank you for your service” at the annual Christmas dinner. It means backing them on every level.

Here are a few examples of what real support looks like in today’s fire service, career and volunteer:

Operations:
• Proper staffing and coverage, so crews aren’t stretched too thin
• Up-to-date PPE, tools, and apparatus that are maintained and reliable
• Consistent, high-quality training and drilling
• Clear SOPs/SOGs that prioritize civilians first, firefighters second, and hold people accountable at all levels

Around the Firehouse:
• Strong leadership with clear expectations and real follow-through
• Open communication, concerns addressed early, not after burnout hits
• Respect across every rank
• Mentorship for new members and opportunities to grow for everyone

Mental Health
• Access to mental health resources, peer support, and critical incident care
• Fitness and injury-prevention programs that protect firefighters long-term
• A culture where it’s okay to say, “I’m not okay,” get help without stigma, and, if comfortable, share your story with your peers

At Home
• Schedules and policies that acknowledge the impact of shift work, or life at the volunteer fire station
• Benefits and resources that support spouses/partners and kids
• Support systems for line-of-duty injuries and recovery

To every firefighter: We see you.
To every community member: Support and respect your firefighters.
To every Fire Chief: Stand up for your firefighters—support them and trust them.

Because empowered firefighters build stronger teams and safer communities.

Never Forget.

Anyone who has spent time in the fire service knows the reality of its highs and lows. There are the unforgettable moments — saving a life, running into a burning building — and then there are the hard ones: witnessing death, responding to calls that abuse the 911 system, and dealing with the emotional weight that comes with the job.

But some of the hardest moments don’t come from the calls, they come from within. From the people we expected to lead us, guide us, and teach us. Sometimes, the organization you swore an oath to can be the source of your greatest frustration and disappointment.
We all have things we wish we could change about the fire service, but no matter how broken it may feel at times, never forget why you're here.
The person on the other end of that call — the one living through the worst day of their life — doesn’t care about the bad policy your chief just announced. They don’t know your truck is outdated or under-equipped. They need help. And they called you.

One of the greatest fire officers I’ve ever worked with once told me, “At the end of the day, you have to be able to look yourself in the mirror.”
Don’t let negativity drag you down. Set your own standards — high ones — and hold the line.

This picture is of a 6-year-old who wanted more
than anything in the world to be a firefighter someday.
He wouldn’t know about broken policies, budget cuts, or burnout.
He just knows firefighters save lives.
Be the firefighter he believes you are. Whether your department runs 10 calls a year or 100,000, the moment will come when someone needs you.

The question is: Will you be ready?
