🐟 And just like that, students at Long Range Academy, Bonne Bay Academy and Jakeman All Grade saw their Atlantic Salmon fry return home!

With support from Fisheries and Oceans Canada and Parks Canada, the Exploits River Hatch and Release Program’s collaboration with schools in Gros Morne began back in January when eyed Atlantic Salmon eggs were collected from the Environment Resources Management Association (ERMA) in Grand Falls-Windsor.

🌊 Thanks to this valuable partnership, students got to witness the salmon’s early life stages — hatching into alevin in March and developing into fry by April. In the fry stage, students learned how to feed them daily and how to clean and maintain their aquarium water.

🏞️ During the last week in May, students from these local schools embarked on an exciting road trip to bring their fry back to Grand Falls- Windsor. At Gorge Park, near the Salmonid Interpretation Centre, ERMA guided students as they returned the young salmon to their home river - the place where, one day, they’ll grow into parr, then smolt, go to sea, and eventually return as powerful adults to spawn.

✨ Thanks to Terry Paul, Director of ERMA, for making this program possible and to the staff and students of all three schools for inviting Parks Canada to be part of this amazing project which has created a lasting experience for students — and a strong start for the next generation of salmon.

🌊 World Oceans Day 🌊

In recognition of World Oceans Day, Parks Canada, in collaboration with NL Health Services, came together for a shoreline clean-up in Port au Choix. This joint effort highlights the importance of protecting our coastal ecosystems and keeping marine environments free of debris.

From shoreline to sea, every piece of litter removed helps safeguard wildlife, preserve habitat, and support the long-term health of our oceans.

A big thank you to everyone involved for taking action and showing what partnership in conservation looks like in practice.

💙 Together, we can keep our coasts clean, healthy, and thriving.

🦌 World Caribou Day

Today is a chance to learn about caribou and why they matter. These animals are an important part of nature and culture—but they face real challenges like habitat loss and climate change.
In Newfoundland and Labrador, Parks Canada helps protect three unique caribou groups:

✅ Torngat Mountains Caribou – found in Torngat Mountains National Park and surrounding areas
✅ Mealy Mountains Caribou – living in and around Akami-Uapishkᵁ-KakKasuak-Mealy Mountains National Park Reserve
✅ Newfoundland Caribou – found across the island, including Terra Nova National Park, Gros Morne National Park, and Port au Choix National Historic Site

Each group is important to Indigenous and local communities ❤️
Each group also faces different challenges.

Parks Canada is working to monitor and protect caribou and share their story—so we can all help keep them on the landscape for future generations. ✨

🐝🌼 Meet the bumblebee: one of nature’s fuzzy little powerhouses!

Bumblebees are a type of bee known for their plump bodies and soft hairs that give them their signature fuzzy look. But they’re more than just cute—they’re incredible pollinators that help many plants thrive. 🌸

Most bumblebees live socially in colonies, working together to build nests and support their communities. They’re also amazing at regulating their body temperature, even warming themselves with the sun’s rays! ☀️

Unfortunately, many bumblebee species are declining due to habitat loss and pesticide use. Protecting wild spaces and planting pollinator-friendly flowers can help support these essential pollinators. 🌿

Every bee matters. Let’s help keep our ecosystems buzzing! 💛🖤
