A little antique doll has found her new life at Dolls’ Stories Hospital.

This cabinet-size Armand Marseille bisque doll arrived in my workshop with a fragile composition body, a damaged neck socket, and more than a century of old repairs. Yet her porcelain head was completely intact, with extraordinary deep blue sleep eyes and almost perfect original mohair lashes.

Step by step, she was cleaned, stabilized, restrung, and carefully restored using natural materials and historically sympathetic techniques. Her original mohair wig was revived, a custom cork pate was made, and she received a complete handmade wardrobe inspired by the early 20th century—silk chiffon dress, antique-style underwear, stockings, tiny leather boots, and a bonnet.

The basement has dried, and the damaged parts of the workshop floor and walls have been removed and hauled away. We are beginning flood restoration work in St. Catharines.

A small detail can completely change an antique doll’s expression.

In this behind-the-scenes restoration step, I made new eyelashes for an antique doll using a strand of my own hair, selected to match the soft tone of her original painted eyebrows.

The lashes were prepared on a double cotton thread, then attached to handmade wax eyelids before the eye mechanism was reassembled. It is delicate work, almost invisible in the finished doll, but it makes the eyes look complete and brings balance back to the face.

How do sleeping eyes work inside an antique doll’s head?

In this restoration, I repaired and reinstalled an original antique eye rocker, the hidden mechanism that allows a doll’s glass eyes to open when she is upright and close when she is laid down.

The work involved cleaning and stabilizing the original part, rebuilding its protective wax coating, carefully positioning it inside the head, and testing the mechanism once the plaster supports had set.

The finished mechanism is almost completely hidden, but it makes all the difference to the doll’s expression and function.

A porcelain doll arrived with a hidden but serious problem: the original plaster eye mount had detached inside her head, leaving the glass eyes loose against the porcelain.

I carefully disassembled the head, returned the original eye assembly to its proper position, and secured it safely. What began as an eye repair became a small restoration project with cleaning, strengthening, and minor repairs.

Overall, the doll has been completely refurbished. The stuffing has been restored, and the hair has undergone a lengthy process of cleaning, nourishing, and styling.
The blue color doesn't fade so quickly; it needs a few more weeks or months to lighten. This will be the responsibility of our little owner.

I was lucky that the thin curling iron with the temperature regulator survived. So there is an opportunity to renew the curls in the doll.
