This June we honour National Indigenous History MonthđŸȘ¶

At YWCA Niagara Region, we recognize that we are situated on the traditional territory of the Haudenosaunee and Anishinaabe peoples. Throughout this month, we aim to deepen our understanding of the rich histories, cultures, and contributions of the First Nations, Inuit, and Métis peoples of Canada.

We remain dedicated in our efforts to recognize, assess, and aid in the process of reconciliation through our support of Indigenous women and families.

For some, being seen is empowering. For others, it’s still dangerous. That’s why days like this matter. They remind us that equality isn’t fully here yet—and that solidarity isn’t just a word, it’s something we practice in how we treat people every day.

The YW’s WNAH program maintains a waiting list of clients in need of affordable housing. We are looking for landlords who are willing to work with us to provide rental housing for these individuals and families.

When you lease your property to us, you will have a secure tenancy with secured rent being paid directly to you by the YW, according to the tenancy agreement. The lease between the YW and the landlord is retained in a traditional landlord-tenant relationship. Even if a client becomes ineligible to participate in the housing program or if the apartment is vacant, we still pay the negotiated rent as agreed in the lease.

Our current landlords enjoy peace of mind and cost savings with reduced advertising and vacancy costs, as well as saving valuable time. If you are interested in working with us through our landlord program, please contact our Housing & Landlord Engagement worker for more information, 289-228-7947 or by email at [email protected]!

To all mothers today and especially to the women currently in our programs, please know this: You are stronger than you know, braver than you realize, and you are doing an incredible job under unimaginable circumstances. 💙

For many, the path here has been shaped by a painful silence. As one woman shared: “I thought it was just the way life was... there was no safe house, no shelter a woman could run to for protection. So, many women, including my mother, they just stood there and took it. I took on that generational trait. You were just supposed to take it.”

We are here to say: No one should have to just "take it."

To break the cycle of intergenerational homelessness, we must address the unique housing challenges faced by Canadian women. When we fail to provide single mothers with the resources they need, we risk passing the burden of poverty down to their children. But when we provide a safe environment and critical support, we change the trajectory of an entire family.

Generational poverty often starts with the struggles of a mother, but it can also end with her.

This Mother’s Day, please consider making a donation to the YWCA Niagara Region. Your gift can honour an incredible mother in your life by providing safety and a fresh start for a mom staying with us today. Donate through the link below: https://www.canadahelps.org/en/dn/67909?v2=true

May 5th, known as Red Dress Day, is recognized as the National Day of Awareness for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls and 2SLGBTQIA+ People. It is a day to remember and honour the many Indigenous women, girls, and Two-Spirit people (MMIWG2S) who have been killed or disappeared.

MMIWG2S cases frequently remain unsolved, leaving families in the dark and without closure. The empty, hanging red dresses are a powerful and haunting symbol of those who are missing—an urgent call to continue raising awareness and demanding systemic change. Red Dress Day reminds us that colonialism, racism, and sexism intersect to further marginalize Indigenous women, girls and Two-Spirit people, and places them at greater of violence.

We grieve with those who have lost loved ones and stand with families and communities in their fight for justice. We call on the government to renew its commitment to act on the 2016 inquiry findings and implement the 231 calls for justice.
