Our History
On May 4, 1793, the Loyal Company was formed in Saint John in response to the threat of attack by French privateers. In 1838 all artillery Batteries around the province were constituted into the New Brunswick Regiment of Artillery. This makes the Regiment the oldest continuous serving artillery unit in Canada. Gunners volunteered for service during the Aroostook, or 'Pork 'n Beans' war
. In 1866, the St. Andrews Battery, under Captain Osborn, was reformed in preparation against a Fenian attack. In June 1866, Captain Pick's Battery manned the guns at Partridge Island to defend Saint John from Fenian attack. The Carleton Martello Tower and Sand Cove beach were also defended. The Regiment was placed on active service during the Great War 1914-1918. Over 2000 gunners were sent overseas, including the 4th and 6th Siege Batteries, the 2nd Divisional Am******on Column, and re-enforcement drafts of the 9th Siege Battery. The first Canadian killed during this war was Captain Ernest Jones who died on August 5, 1914 while serving with a British Regiment. Le 4 mai 1793, la Loyal Company est constituée à Saint John en guise de protection contre les éventuelles attaques des cola province sont regroupées pour former le Régiment d’artillerie du Nouveau-Brunswick. En 1866, la batterie de St. Andrews, sous le commandement du Capitaine Osborn, est remise sur pied en prévision d’une attaque par les Fenians. En juin 1866, la batterie du Capitaine Pick tire du canon à partir de l’Île Partridge pour défendre Saint John contre les Fenians, protégeant aussi la tour Martello de Carleton et la plage Sand Cove. La batterie du Capitaine Gillespie, à Chatham, mène des exercices de tir tous les étés dans les années 1870. Newcastle a également sa batterie. Des artilleurs de toute la province, dont 18 de Woodstock, servent en Afrique du Sud de 1899 à 1902. La première perte au combat du Régiment est le Caporal Fred Withers, mort au combat à Paardeburg. Un officier du Régiment, le Capitaine Fred C. Jones, y reçoit pour sa part le pavillon de reddition des mains du Général Cronje. Il mourra en service pendant la Première Guerre mondiale.
