Saint John Laboratory Services Ltd (SJLS) is an independently locally-owned laboratory located on the west side of Saint John, New Brunswick, Canada. Lets take a minute to talk about drinking water and emergencies. Emergency situations can arise without warning. It’s always important to be ready – and what could be more vital than access to drinking water? As a part of your 72 Emergency Preparedness kit, you should have at least 4L of water per person or pet for 3 days (2L for drinking and 2L for cooking/cleaning).

The safest way to store water is in durable and unbreakable containers with secure caps. It's a good idea to include small bottles that can be carried easily in case of evacuation.

If you are using normal tap water for long term storage, it should be treated prior to storage to prevent the growth of bacteria; there are several different treatment options. You containers should be securely capped and label each one with the date of preparation before storing. Store containers in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and plan to replace your supply every 6 months.
