In 1786 Canada's oldest incorporated city, Saint John, established the Saint John Fire department. In 1864 The SJFD became a permanent paid force and in May of 1919 members of the SJFD joined the IAFF as Local 192. After a 10 year split from the IAFF between 1932-1942 they rejoined the IAFF as Local 771 in November, 1943.

It was a busy Saturday for your Saint John Firefighters, with members taking part in several community events across the city.

From helping the 11UAA Port City Pirates with their bottle drive, to taking part in the Vimy Anniversary Run at Ridgewood, and serving burgers while displaying our historic pumper at the MADD event, our members were proud to represent Saint John Firefighters throughout the day.

Thank you to everyone who came out and supported these worthwhile causes. We are grateful for every opportunity to give back to the community that supports us every day.

As wildfire season approaches, Platoon 3 Uptown has been hard at work going through our wildland fire packs, completing detailed inventory and safety checks. Every piece of equipment is inspected to ensure it’s operational, accessible, and ready to be deployed at a moment’s notice.

Preparation is critical when it comes to wildland firefighting. From hand tools to medical supplies, making sure our gear is in top condition helps us respond quickly and safely when called upon.

Residents are encouraged to stay informed by checking daily wildfire burn notices here: https://www.gnb.ca/en/emergency/fire-watch.html

As always, we ask everyone to use caution with outdoor burning, follow local regulations, and report any signs of wildfire activity immediately.

Your Saint John Firefighters were proud to carry on the tradition of our annual “Smoker,” an event dedicated to recognizing those who have hung up their gear over the past year. It’s always a great night that brings together retirees, active members, and new recruits to catch up, share stories, and celebrate the strong bond within our union.

A highlight of the evening was President Tyler Embree presenting ceremonial rings to this year’s retirees: Brother Peter Woodhouse, Brother Trevor Tompkins, Brother Larry Salmon, and Brother Tony Black.

Thank you to everyone who came out and made the night a success. And to our retirees, congratulations and thank you for your years of commitment and service. You’ve helped build the foundation we carry forward today.

Shortly after 10:00 p.m. last night, your Saint John firefighters responded to a fire at a multi-unit apartment building on Tower Street in the Lower West Side.

Engine 6, with a crew of four firefighters, arrived on scene to find heavy black smoke showing from the building. Crews quickly started a fire attack while simultaneously conducting a search for any occupants. A second alarm was called, bringing in additional personnel to the fire, leaving just one truck in service while both tankers remained unstaffed at their stations.

Firefighters worked quickly to get the fire under control. Despite their efforts, the building sustained extensive fire damage. Thankfully, no injuries were reported.

Yesterday, your Saint John Firefighters responded simultaneously to a structure fire and a motor vehicle accident which tied up every available firefighting resource in the city.

Two calls. That’s all it took.

While firefighters were committed to protecting lives at those scenes, the city was left without the ability to respond immediately to other emergencies, including medical calls.

Our firefighters continue to do an incredible job with the staffing and resources they have but yesterday showed how dangerously thin emergency coverage can become in a matter of minutes. As our community grows and call volumes increase, the need for proper staffing, additional apparatus, and stronger investment in emergency services becomes more critical than ever.

Thankfully, no injuries were reported.

Pride in our profession, and love for our community.

We pause on this International Firefighters Day to reflect on the courage, dedication, and sacrifice made by the members of Local 771 not only on the frontlines, but behind the scenes as well. On behalf of President Tyler Embree, thank you!

We are proud to serve the residents and City of Saint John!

This afternoon, Local 771 President Tyler Embree had the honour of speaking at Lily Lake Pavilion as we gathered to mark the National Day of Mourning, a solemn day to honour the workers we have lost and recommit ourselves to protecting the living.

"Brothers, sisters, and members of our community. We gather today on the most solemn day of the labour calendar. Our National Day of Mourning. We are here to mourn the workers who we have lost, and to also fight for the rights of the living.
As Firefighters, we see the toll of this job in many ways.

We not only see the immediate tragedies, but we also face the silent, devastating toll of occupational diseases, the killers like cancer that take our members far from the fire ground, long after the sirens have stopped. Today, we make a solemn pledge: we will not let their sacrifices be in vain.
Their legacy is our fuel. It is the grit and determination we carry to ensure that no other family has to stand where you are standing today.

To the families of the fallen: we know that no speech and no ceremony can fill the void left behind. But I want you to know that your loved ones are still here with us. Every time you feel the sun on your face, every time the wind is at your back, and every night when you look up at the stars in the sky, let those be happy reminders of the people you loved and cherished. They are not just statistics. They are the light and the strength that continue to guide us forward.

To the employers and leaders who prioritize safety above the bottom line: We commend you. You understand that a 'job well done' is only true if every worker walks back through their front door at the end of their shift. Your commitment to providing the right tools, the proper training, and a truly safe environment is noticed, and it is respected.

But let this also serve as a staunch reminder to those who do not put their employees first: We are watching. Whether you are behind a desk in a corporate office or managing a work site in a busy street, know that all working groups here and afar will hold you accountable. In our line of work, we know that safety is not a suggestion, and hope is not a strategy. Safety is a fundamental right that every worker deserves. If you fail to protect your workers, I promise you this, we will be here to demand justice.

May we leave here today not just with heavy hearts, but with a renewed fire in our bellies to protect one another. Let us keep the memory of our loved ones alive and well by refusing to accept the status quo. Let us unite and continue the fight for a safe workplace, so that every single worker in this province gets to go home.

Mourn for the dead and fight like hell for the living.”

We extend our sincere thanks to the Hatheway Trust, Saint John and District Labour Council, and Lily Lake Pavilion for hosting this meaningful event.
