Fresh Start Services for Women Inc

Fresh Start Services for Women Inc Fresh Start Services is a community agency that works to reduce poverty and homelessness by offering support, education and advocacy to those in need.

Our goal is to reach out to those at the lowest point in their lives by giving them support and access to available resources and programs thereby helping them attain new-found stability, and achieve self-sufficient lives. Each case that we accept is different, but there are three general steps that we follow:

(1) Initial Assessment: addressing the causes of their poverty and impending homelessne

ss, and taking care of their immediate needs. (2) Advocacy & Foundation Building: in order to make long-term changes in our clients lives and setting them on the path to stable and self-sufficient living, Fresh Start:

• advocates on behalf of clients in crisis situations
• develops collaborative action plans, sets goals and timelines
• provides agency referrals, access to programs, and possible emergency funds

(3) Follow-Up Support: for each client, we develop a long-term development plan for self sufficiency, through life skills advice and practical planning. We will ensure that Fresh Start clients have the best chance to maintain stable lives by active participation with other service agencies. Fresh Start is dedicated to helping the poor, working poor, homeless, and those who can’t find help with existing social agencies. We have the skills to help with many different poverty-related situations, including evictions, forced re-locations due to fires, landlord bankruptcy, poor living conditions, inability to pay damage deposits and utilities - just to name a few. Every case is unique, but our goal is to advocate and stand up for our clients, put them in contact with available resources, and give them the best possible support to have quality, self-sufficient lives. We’re so grateful for our event sponsors: ICS Creative Agency, Fundy Engineering, and The Town of Rothesay!

Their generosity helped create an incredible night and allowed us to raise over $10,000 in support of Fresh Start’s mission of ending homelessness in Saint John.

Please show our sponsors some love!

We’re already dreaming about next year and if you and your business would like to be a part of it, our doors (and messages) are open! 🤝

With the Holiday's fast approaching we want to remind everyone to register for any Christmas support programs available in your community. This is especially important when we know government funded programs expect you to prioritize rent and hydro payments over the holidays and will not approve grants if large amounts were spend on retail items. This includes Grants such as the Provincial Rent Bank that are only meant for extreme short-term financial emergencies. You can reach out to the Saint John Community Christmas Exchange and the Salvation Army. Make sure to register asap so you don't miss out.

Hey Everyone, We want to share a public information post about Rent Bank applications. We do have a staff that is able to assist with the Provincial Rent Bank application process in cases where support is required. This is the only in-person option for Saint John, with one staff providing the service. Our staff will only assist with applicants who are unable to apply on their own online. This prioritizes people who have mobility challenges, a disability, cognitive disabilities, computer literacy challenges, or seniors who need support. If you need access to a computer to apply and are able, you can use the library or community centres for computer access. Those who are able to apply on their own or with a community service worker are encouraged to do so through this link:

The rent bank grant is intended to provide financial help to renters experiencing a temporary and unplanned crisis that is threatening their housing stability. If you are facing eviction, you may be eligible.

✨The Human Development Council was proud to co-host “Building Belonging: A Community Dialogue About Encampments in Saint John.”

Held at the Kent Theatre, the event brought together neighbours, community leaders, elected officials, and people with lived experience for open and respectful conversations about housing challenges and how we can work together on solutions. 🏠💛
